In the first race at Washington Park on Saturday, June 23, 1894, Peytonia won the one-mile race by a neck, and became what was believed to be the longest shot ever to win a race. This was prior to pari-mutuel wagering, and bookmakers paid 1,000 to 1 on him. He had not won in fifteen previous starts that year.
