"dray, you didn't answer my question. Which 3,017 of the yearlings should be compared to the 3,017 2yo's which sold? Surely you can't believe that a comparison of the select group of 2yo's which have been hand picked from the 10,142 sales crop is a valid one? That would be like asking how do Harvard...

Certainly the highest priced yearlings go the way of the end-user. That's why I tempered my comments by saying that "in a sense" the 2yo's sold represent a select group of horses. Pinhookers love a certain type that we are all familiar with, the kind of horse who will preview well at 2. I suspect th...

Fireslam, true, but from the data I've seen, between 90-95% of the Barretts 2yo's sold as yearlings. It's fair to say that percentage would generally hold true for the other 2yo sales. Clearly, comparisons are fine so long as you're doing with correct methodology. Comparing a sub-group to the entire...

Ill-bred, I don't think anyone believes that good horses can't be found in the 2yo in training sales. Obviously, many good horses have survived the rigors of sales training to win good races. The question is how much potential was left on the track on preview day, and in the few months preceding it?...

dray said "I don't need to go into all the supporting evidence of how the 2Yo sales is a buyers best shot at recouping his/her investment dollar. It's simply fact." Sorry, can't agree with you on this point. For the reasons similar to those you cited later in your post (about the 2yo's being bred fo...

dray, good for you for stepping outside the box. In your estimation, what is the best way to forge a reasonable format for 2 year old sales? Imposed by sales co.? Imposed by racing jurisdictions? Imposed by hosting racetrack? Negotiated between the above and the principals? Since we agree that the k...

Not sure why you would call it a beauty pageant. It's a training sale. Training implies a regimen designed to ready a horse for a race. Two year old previews aren't anything near that. They are designed to ready a horse to perform at his lifetime best on a fixed date. Thus, these horses aren't bein...
