Today's news is that The Ohio Roundtable has announced they will definitely sue to stop the installation of VLTs by executive order. Here's their argument: The Ohio Constitution does allow ticketed lottery games, but prohibits "schemes of chance." The Constitution cannot be changed by executive orde...

In Ohio, a compromise has been reached between the State Senate and the Governor, to be finalized by the budget vote on Wednesday. VLTs will be installed in Ohio's seven racetracks as part of the Ohio Lottery. By defining VLTs as part of the Lottery (by vote of the General Assembly), the Governor ha...

This a very interesting history lesson, Diomed. As I read the description of the Galloways, I was reminded of the Icelandic ponies I had just seen at Equine Affaire, held in Columbus in April. Wow, what a size difference between those ponies and the modern thoroughbred!

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, this summer will be much the same as last with less than normal rainfall. I'll be stocking up as much hay as I can find.

Geo-there's nothing that warms my heart better than hearing a Scottish accent. In my mind, I can still hear my grandma's lilting accent as she recited the Selkirk Grace every Thanksgiving. Thanks for bringing that memory back.

One problem I have with the concept of a highly-publicized match race is that there would be incredible pressure not to scratch a sick horse. In other words, if a few million dollars had been spent promoting a match race and one horse spikes a slight fever or has a bit of heat in a leg, would an own...

Its a tough decision because they are such an eyesore, but I would go ahead and sign the lease and take the money. My reasoning for this comes from a farmer's experience here in my part of Ohio. He decided he didn't want a tower behind his house because he didn't want to have to look at it everyday ...

I organized a Breeders Cup handicapping contest for the ladies who work in an office I visit, and the woman who won hit FIVE winners. Because of the contest, they all said they had tuned in on Saturday to watch the races. I had given them the post times, so they did tune out between races. They love...

Hi. They coordinate their Q-Horse races with Quarterhorse Congress, the huge show at the State Fairgrounds in Columbus. But in answer to your question, I'm not sure how many years they've been doing this.

The key is that they'll feature night racing. That's the only way a track can expect to draw crowds of younger, working people. A lighting system for "only" 1.25 million--I always heard it was much more expensive than that, which is why tracks say they don't want to install the lights for night raci...

For those of you who get RFD tv, they have been advertising a show on laminitis Monday, Sept. 17th at 8:00 Eastern. From the ad, it looks like it will be kind of a basic primer.

Weaning by the moon

Hi all. Its weaning time for my foal. The past few years, I have weaned by the sign of the moon. The foals have seemed less stressed, and the broodmares have seemed MUCH less stressed. Am I imagining this? Also, I have found (for the typical foal) that weaning at five months of age seems to work wel...
