ACTH

How well does ACTH as a pre race medication work? Does it calm the horse down significantly?

European Horses

Do European TB's get a lip tattoo just like they do in North America or how do they ID them?
How would I find out some information about a European horse named 'Master Nergal'?
Thank you!

He was imported this summer with the intention of running him up here in Canada. He flew to the USA and was vanned up here. During the trip he got VERY ...

skeenan, you have to be very careful! There's a salmonella outbreak at the farm I work at. One of the other girls got it. She was really sick for a few days.

Update: the meningitis was caused by salmonella! The farm has lost 2 more foals due to multiple septic joints cause by salmonella. And 'what a surprise'... the farm is poorly managed.
Sorry... just hate to see horses suffer for no reason.

Well, both of them are standing and nursing! That's great! Most of the time (even if twins are born alive) one of them is usually too weak to stand and nurse on its own and often dies after a day or two. If you are worried that the mare is not producing enough milk you can supplement with milk repla...

One day when we were turning in a group of 5 mares and foals something similar happened. The part time girl started bringing in without me. Brought up the first mare and 'her' foal, put them in the stall. When she put the next mare and foal set in the stall, I walked in the door and just saw the mar...

Stress can trigger salmonella (shipping, surgery, illness etc). Neonates, old and immunosupressed people and horses are at the highest risk. We have a salmonella outbreak at the farm I work at right now! We have already lost 3 foals... Healthy adult horses are at a low risk. It is extremly important...

bacterial meningitis

We lost a 16 day old filly today (due to bacterial meningitis). Yesterday morning she exhibited neurological signs, she also had diarreah. Her temperature was 103.7 F. The day before she was fine. She had two seizures before we sent her off to the clinic. (Always a horrible sight.)
Any thoughts?

After 2 hours we consider it a retained placenta and start the mare on 0.5 cc IM every hour. Lots of mares will respond to the first or second injection. After a few hours we will start to give 1 cc IM every hour and tie a dry towel to the amnion/placenta. After 12 hrs we start bute and TMS. I worke...
