Stress can trigger salmonella (shipping, surgery, illness etc). Neonates, old and immunosupressed people and horses are at the highest risk. We lost a 16 day old filly today (due to bacterial meningitis). Yesterday morning she exhibited neurological signs, she also had diarreah. Her temperature was 103.7 F. The day before she was fine. She had two seizures before we sent her off to the clinic. (Always a horrible sight.)

After 2 hours we consider it a retained placenta and start the mare on 0.5 cc IM every hour. Lots of mares will respond to the first or second injection.
