Couldn't agree more, there are only so many spots in the qualifiers, so what is the criteria to get into the qualifier? Now we're really narrowing the focus of horse racing to just the few big prep races, very much the "good old boys club" that many would like. I'm not a fan of it. A series like thi...

New Derby Qualifications / Points System

With the new "points system" to qualify for the Derby, now only the "select" races will count vs. graded stakes earnings. Fantastic  Now, what will be the qualifications to get into the qualifiers? There are only so many spots in the starting gates for those races, too! While this is great for...

Actually, O'Neal DID threaten to pull out of the race, but over the ban on cooking oats that came alond with the move to the new barn. Matz also objected, since he also cooks his oats, and the powers that be backed down.

Petrino vs Dutrow

Both guys hugely successful, one gets canned immediately, the other keeps getting more horses. Why don't owners demand the same from their trainers, integrity-wise? Is it because an NCAA sanction is for real, while the racing commissions can't muster up more than a slap on the hand? At least MD has ...

Just want to add a comment to this thread as well--SHRP just increased purses $1000 per race due to a handle increase of 23%. From The Paulick Report and an SHRP Press Release: Feb. 23, 2012 - Sam Houston Race Park will initiate a purse increase for the remainder of the 2012 Thoroughbred meet. An ad...

SHRP must be doing something right, handle is up and they just increased purses $1000 per race. Looks like we're heading in the right direction!

FYI TVG and HRTV are both on the basic Top 120 Dish Network lineup, I had to upgrade the sports package on DirecTV and they will only carry TVG, so I switched years ago. I HATE to see Bob B and Frank Lyons go, two of the smartest horse people on the air. But this is par for the course at TVG, they'v...

With the big success of sons of El Prado (Medaglia D'Oro, Kittens Joy), Paddy O'Prado will get a lot of attention if he continues to hit the board in the classics, but his bottom end doesn't jump out at me as very commercial. But I do love the El Prado sire line.

We're moving to TX and wanted to check in with this forum on your recommendations for thoroughbred trainers running on the TX/LA circuits--who would you recommend looking in to (and why) and what tracks are they running at?

RAs only losses came when she was pressed on a hot early pace (something like 23 / 47) but she did that in the Oaks and won easily--do you see anyone in here that can push her to a 23 / 46 pace and set it up for the closers?

Sorry to hear the legislation didn't fly, but being an eternal optimist, I think you're really not that horribly bad off in Texas as far as purse money goes. Compare your purse structure to the latest track in our area to get slots--Indiana Downs. With slots-fueled purses, your MSW and Allowances pu...

Saw on HRTV that if CD would harrow the track and "open it up" then she would have run, but if they sealed it, they did not want to risk an injury as CD is know to be hard and sting when sealed. Kinda the same thing Mullins said/did this AM when IWR scratched--the ankle was sensitive, then to try to...

Griff,

From the owner's perspective, the nomination also makes the horse eligible to run in MD-bred restricted races and restricted stakes races (you're not eligible for those if not a registered MD-bred) and you also get bonuses for winning open MSW and open allowance races at MD tracks.
