Well notice that every finishing position means something, to both the owners and the jockeys. Has this ever been tried before - at any track? Among other things, this format might make stamina more valuable than speed, since longshot closers will usually beat a few horses to the wire while overmatc...

Presque Isle Downs isn't the only track at which the winner's share of the purse is a hot issue right now.

The Northern California tracks have just changed their purse-division format, awarding 60% to their winners, instead of the previous 55%:
