I'm not a learned horeman but i know with dogs if you hit them after they've gone to the bathroom and too much time has gone past they can't relate as to why you've hit them. Interestingly, and sadly, as slaughter is made tougher, all Western states are experiencing a HUGE growth in wild/feral horse populations. People are just turning them loose to starve.
