Da' Tara and Denis of Cork

Postby madelyn » Sun Jun 08, 2008 9:20 am

Did anyone else look at the pedigrees of these two? The 1-2 punch in the Belmont? Da' Tara is out of a full sister to Denis of Cork's 2nd dam. Kind of an interesting coincidence.

I hadn't heard anyone else mention that, madelyn. What an angle! The media certainly missed that one.

If BB had to lose and Casino Drive wasn't in the race (I bet that killed you haven't seeing BB's performance), I was so glad to see a son of Tiznow out of a Pirate's Bounty mare win the race! Two of my favorite California connections. And I have a Tizbud filly! :D

I mentioned it in another thread. The Kay Ho family has been hot lately. Sierra Sunset, another graded winner on the Derby trail this year is also from the family.

You can find horses from this family in almost every OBS sale. It's a family that has a ton of representatives, especially in Florida.

Sierra Sunset also has the Kay Ho-Pirate's Bounty cross. Seems like a good nick. I was going to check if Kay Ho and her daughters had other Pirate's Bounty foals but the progeny reports don't seem to be working.

Wow, that's cool. I give props to Denis of Cork hitting the board in another classic. He's a plucky colt...perhaps he will get his chance to land a Grade I later this summer in the Travers.

This just makes me want to cry....I had a few mares that I needed to sell earlier this year and one of them was I Forgot by Artax out of Dancers Dream by Pirates Bounty...2nd dam Kay Ho! I practically gave her away to people who wont sell her back  to breed to WB's.

I also have a friend who has another mare from this family and he is currently selling a nice NYBred 2yr old named Wisdom Seeker..she is down in Florida and has the female line. Actually looking at this closer..I think he owns Da Tara's 1/2 sister by Unbridled! But the database seems to not be working.

Hi

Both Da' Tara and Denis of Cork trace to the conduit mare, Princess Mary (B/S), (5i) (1917) by Hessian, who produced the 1925 Kentucky Derby winner Flying Ebony before the race reached the status it has today.
I certainly didn't foresee the outcome of this Belmont since I was firmly entrenched in the Big Brown camp.

Glad you said that. I was wracking my brains to remember the mare whose pedigree I looked at most recently who had this family. Now I know!

A half to Da' Tara is in the upcoming OBSJune. Talk about fortuitous timing....

Hello,
Bill mentioned "Princess Mary" in his comment of the Belmont 1 - 2.

There are at least 2 European "family members" from the 20th Century, Sunstar (by Sundridge) won 2000 Guineas, Derby and Rock Flint (by Rock Sand). Sunstar is the Sire of Sunny Jane, Buchan, Craig an Eran etc. and Rock Flint you will see in the damline of Rockefella (by Felstead).

Best rgards, Bettina
