Kentucky Horse Park is a possibility, esp. if he wins some more G1's.

Just like with Funny Cide, race him till the well runs dry.

You probably meant that a little gentler than it came out. The Sackatoga people didn't grind the last win out of Funny Cide. He was still capable of winning a minor stakes race when they retired him, as opposed to the sad stories of previous Triple Crown contenders like Balto Star that wind up running for $3200 at some place like Beulah. Funny retired pretty close to the top, they let the Taggs keep him where he was loved until it seemed like he was ready for complete retirement, and then they sent him to Horse Paradise at the Horse Park, a place that kept John Henry in great shape into his 30's. That is not wringing the last drop out.

Balto Star

Postby foundationmare » Wed May 06, 2009 3:49 pm

Is it true that Balto Star was running as a cheap claimer in Ohio???? If it is...shame on his connections who truly did wring the last dollar out of him, even if it didn't include their direct involvement. I understand how horses can get out of your hands, but he should not be running cheap claimers...anywhere! Oh hell.....I hate to see ANY of them running into the ground.

Funny Cide

BTW, I watched Funny Cide run his last race at Finger Lakes. He won easily and was given a proper display of appreciation and honor. Sackatoga would never have entertained the notion of wringing the last out of him. Granted, the venue wasn't the higher echelon of thoroughbred racing, but it was, nonetheless, a packed venue that cheered the little gelding that could.

Mine That Bird might become a real popular runner for years to come. He's certainly quick as a cat on mud and can slip through a knothole in a nineteen horse field.

These connections? Mine That Bird will get to KY Horse Park when some kind hearted person feels bad for him and claims him for $5,000 to retire him down the road.

No, I checked my facts, and that is not the horse I was thinking of. Brisnet shows his last start was in a graded stake, so I must be thinking of another horse. I'm sure I can give you a long list of former stars that were running at the bottom, though. Just give me a day.

El Bakan was who I was trying to think of. He ran in the 1993 Derby, and finished his career in a $3500 claimer at Penn National. Whew! Apologies to Balto Star's connections...didn't mean to smear you.
