Boarding farms in KY

Postby Pav » Wed Feb 03, 2010 7:27 pm

I am considering sending some mares to KY to breed this season. Does anyone any have any recommendations on boarding farms to use in the Lexington area to board and foal out the mare, and facilitate the breeding process at the bigger stud farms (e.g., checking the mare to see when she's ready to breed, arranging transportation, etc). It would be a short-term arrangment as I would ultimately want to ship the mare(s) back to CA. I understand that some of these boarding farms can be expensive, so I'm looking for something reasonable cost-wise. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thx,
Pav

I have my two mares and yearlings at Grimes Mill Farm, Its a very nice operation. 700 total acres of which about 250 devoted to horses. $24.00 a day.

Last year I sent two mares to Hopewell. The mares were bred to stallions that are high in demand with a full book of mares so the timing had to be perfect for breeding. The ultrasounds/palpations were reasonable and the mares were checked often. The farm manager handled it all very well and both mares caught first cover.

The mares will be going back after they foal here to be re-bred in a month or so.

I have been very happy at Glennwood http://www.glennwoodfarm.com/, but they fill up fast. Beware of some of the contracts stating your mare must stay 90 days after a positive preg check. I have seen that a few times, and while it is usually not a problem, it might not suit you.

Lee McMillin has always done an exceptional job..even saved a 3 week old with botulism..carried her like a sack of potatoes to Hagyard and she's fully recoverd and being broke now..have always respected him for that because if you don't pay attention and catch that early it is fatal..can't say enough about Lee..been with him for years
