He was lame off and on for a few weeks now, we thought it was an abcess in his foot that just wasn't coming out. His temp was normal, the vet thinks he got ulcers and that is what did him in. The oppresive heat didn't help any that's for sure. He was fine until that morning, was nursing, drinking water, nibbling hay but not quite right. But the owners of the farm thought that it was because it was so hot. That night when they checked him his breathing was labored so they called us around 11:30. We immediatly went to the farm and we were with him when he passed around 1 am. They had also called the vet but she was with another emergency and didn't make it to us. We called her when he was gone to tell her she didn't need to come out, he was gone.

We are sick about this but we appreciate all the well wishes we have recieved. Words can't tell you how much they mean to us.

Very sorry for your loss winds. I've been in a funk the last 3 weeks since I lost my mare 3 weeks ago while she was boarded out to be bred. She was from NY and it was her first Florida summer and I wonder if she drank enough when it suddenly got super hot in Ocala 3 weeks ago (she collicked). I now care for her 3mo. old orphan. Living in Florida/heat I've become a water nut, leaving troughs of fresh water at every hangout in the pasture. I figure you can't make 'em drink but you can remind them. Of course it sounds like the heat was only a contributing factor with your foal....I wonder if it could have been an infection or would that have had to show in his temp..

The vet said if it had been and infection his temp would have been up. Dang those ulcers. He seemed fine until that last day.

I'm sorry to hear about your mare, it's rough isn't it?

From someone else who lost a good one this year . . .

You said it, sister! It's rough out there.

So sorry for your loss. The highs of this business are high, but the lows can be so heartbreaking.

I think its extra hard to lose a foal. They represent so many hopes and dreams yet to be realized. Godspeed.

An update on mom, she's doing so much better. Not running around crazily, she just lifts her head and whinnies once in awhile. Her yearling daughter is across the driveway from her and she is focusing on her now.

We want to thank everyone for your kind words and condolences. They mean so much to us. There is still the heart break of knowing but we are going on, we have to, there are other horses to worry about.

Winds, I am so sorry for your loss. It is apparent that you care deeply for your horses and I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you. We wait nearly a year, sometimes longer, and breathe a sigh of relief when we are given a healthy foal. We allow ourselves to think about the future and what could be... Then, the reality of a sudden death - it can be devastating. I feel your pain.
