Times question

Postby 3phase » Sun Oct 24, 2010 4:16 pm

I know a little about racing (I'm an Eventer) but not too sure about furlongs compared to times.

Is 6 1/2 furlongs at 1:17.49 a good time? I picked up an ottb a few weeks ago, he injured his tendon but prognosis is good. He won a few races and that was his best time. He is out of Finality and out of a Free at Last mare.
I'm absolutely in love with him!!! And he's so cute!!

Thanks! :)

Times are relative to tracks and conditions. It is difficult to rate a time at a distance without knowing a little more info. You can go to DRF.com and for $4, get the Beyer numbers that your horse ran. The Beyer number is a speed rating system. A number of 90 or above is typically a quality race.

There's a saying, "time only matters if you're in jail."

Lots of other factors contribute to the final time...track, surface condition, class, pace, etc.

track looked good from the pic...raced at Hastings in Vancouver BC. Don't know too much else about the race itself. I tried to find the race on the Hastings website but it wouldn't let me go back to that date which was in the summer.
Thanks for all the info :)

In addition to the other information already posted.

In simple terms:
Click off 12 seconds for every furlong on a track rated fast. At 6f you have an "average" time and a honest claiming horse. At 8f you have a very high priced claimer or an allowance horse. At 9f you have a very good ALW or a entry level stake horse. At 10f you have a Derby contender. At 12 f you have a horse that will rival Secretariat. Beyond that, no one knows or cares!

Hey, that's cool we bred a Finality filly out of a Free at Last mare her name is Finality Philly she ran one of her races in 1:15:09 6 1/2f I think she is at golden gate right now. Do you own your horse or just bred him?

Golden Gate is in California. Our filly is not very pretty got kinda an ugly head, but a very balanced body, good legs and feet, wonderful temperment. We bred her dam to our stallion Cheroot for a Feb.2011 baby. We also have another filly by Finality that did not sell at the sale, she looks a lot like Finality Philly, nice filly. Good luck next year with your guy, what is his name? Cheers, C.

Found a pic of Finality Philly...she looks a lot like Fin (Lego Man.) It's cool to find a link in his pedigree :)
