Hedge Fund

Postby Shammy Davis » Sat Aug 21, 2010 7:49 am

It was announced by Winstar that the gelding Hedge Fund, brother to Super Saver, is being retired from racing and will return to Winstar Farm to live out his days. You've got to like what they are doing at Winstar.

Very nice; bravo WinStar. That's one lucky gelding.

When the boys bought WinStar, the seller's interest in Distorted Humor was (for all intents and purposes) thrown in with the deal  8) :D . Did that turn out to be LUCK Extraordinaire, or what.

In '06 when WinStar purchased Phipps cull  Supercharger (by AP Indy) in foal to Maria's Mon for $160k...that was Brilliant. WOW...an A.P. Indy out of a Mr Prospector...out of Dance Number (by Northern Dancer)...out of Numbered Account (by Buckpasser)...out of Intriguing (by Swaps); and in foal to Maria's Mon.

When the foal that Supercharger was carrying (which was ultimately named SuperSaver) won the Ky Derby for WinStar...WOW, that was again LUCK Extraordinaire!!!

Is it better to be Lucky or Good? Doesn't matter...WinStar is both 8) .

Respectfully

it was "good" that they recognized the value of that mare and went for her. Surprised Phipps would make a mistake like that, given how focused they are on the broodmares. But no one bats a thousand either.

For the amount of mares they've sent to him, Indy hasn't quite repaid the Phipps. They get a lot of plodders by him.

So when the opportunity arose, they liquidated some of those plodders, Supercharger being one of them. I'm sure it made their decision a lot easier since they retained the best mare from the cross, Daydreaming, a graded full-sister to Supercharger.

Let's not forget Winstar also has another full sister in She's a Winner, who is the dam of Bluegrass Cat.

Agree with all.

And today, a Mineshaft filly, It's Tricky ran a nice race to win G-1 CCAO at Saratoga...wore down Baffert filly in a stretch long drive.
