Marino Marini

Postby petersd » Sat Nov 27, 2004 2:59 pm

Mario Marini stands at Rancho San Miguel, home of Roar, Formal Gold and Storm Creek. Listed stud fee is $10,000.
Colt is a stakes winning son (G1 placed in both Ireland and US) of Storm Cat out of the $1.4 million earner Halo America. Sold to Michael Tabor for $1.6 million as a yearling, bought privately as a 3 year old. Lost Mailbu Stakes to Southern Image in last jump.
Having seen the horse, I can tell you he's very correct for a Storm Cat, though not very big (about 15.3 or so). I'm sending my mare Gallant Effort to him next year.

He sure has a pedigree; maybe he'll manage to pass on some of Halo America's toughness.

To go back to the initial question of this thread, G3 winning-sprinter Freespool stood his first season in California in 2004. A breeding to him would be 4x4 Raise a Native through his two best sire sons -- pretty livable if the conformation match is good. Another first-year 2004 sire that might be worth consideration is Decarchy -- I know at $5000 he's above the price range mentioned, but he has such a tremendous pedigree with Toussaud as dam that he might be worth trying to make some sort of a deal for. Again, 4x4 RAN through Mr. P and Alydar, conformation match would need to be very good.

On race record, these look about the pick of the sires who stood their first seasons in California for 2004 anywhere close to the price range you mentioned; I don't know anything about conformation for either of them, so you'd need some input from folks who have actually seen them. Of course, you might want to wait and see what's going to be retired to California for 2005 before making up your mind.

One thing to keep in mind about Decarchy is that he was a turf runner. I think the Toussard Empire Maker connection may give him a lift early but if his kids don't come out running fairly early, the breeders will be off him Toussaud or no Toussaud. In general, they don't like turf stallions without precocity out here, which is partly why Bienamado just got shipped to France.

If you are interested in breeding to him and missed the first year, this year coming up is the best time. The year after that is the scary time when you don't know what a stallion can produce when you breed to him but by the time the resulting foal is a yearling or a two year old, everyone will have a bead on that sire--and more often than not, it can be disappointing. And I know that everyone here doesn't keep the market in mind when they are planning matings but unless they are a multi millionaire with virtually no money worries, I don't see how a breeder can afford to totally ignore the market. You never know when you have to sell.

Good point. Producing completely unsaleable horses isn't good business for anyone, not least the horse.
