Griff,
Is it really? I understand that giving them exercise is good for them, but there's a difference between a trail ride or a session in the riding ring, and race training. How many show riders breeze their horses 5/8's? Don't really think they are comparable.
From what I've read, none of the mares come back to do anything extraordinary, so why do it?
Also, if the mare had an old injury, and is now probably heavier than she was back then, isn't that putting more weight and stress on that injury?
How many stallions come back from breeding to race and do well?
Their bodies change after having a foal, I just don't understand why someone would do this to a mare. Of course, I question a lot of things people do to their animals, so it shouldn't surprise me.

I was reading about Iron Liege last night, and found out his dam Iron Maiden left racing and gave birth to a filly as a 5 year old, then went back into training and won the Del Mar Handicap in 1947 as a 6 year old. The filly she gave birth to in 1946 was Iron Reward, the future dam of Swaps. Mother and daughter were both dams of Kentucky Derby winners, and the "nephew" Swaps won in 1955, two years before his "uncle" Iron Liege in 1957.
Was Iron Maiden taken off the track for "maternity leave" due to WW II, or some other reason, and any idea why she went back in training?
She became a stakes winner after she went back to the races.
