Greetings all
Thanks for all your suggestions.
We had to abbreviate our trip so we went up last weekend and headed back today. When we got there they had a big crowd on Sat night roaming the streets with lots of outdoor music. Was great, til the rains hit.
Were able to do the trackside brunch on Mon. (really nice), trip to the Natl Museum of Racing, and day at the races in one day followed by a beverage at Siros. Took another day to head to Lake Luzerne and Lake George, took in a boat ride and a few local attractions. Came across a used book dealer downtown who had some great older titles (but alas not Tesio...).
It all came together well thanks to your many suggestions. There are enough suggestions to plan a better, longer trip - hopefully next year!
One thing to note for those of us on a budget, there are a lot of old style Adirondack motels (some cottages) up and down Rt. 9 both north and south of Srtga Springs where, with a little research, you can get a room for under $100 a night. The national search engines usually only pull up the big guys that are $150 min, more often $250 and up. So you can do it on a budget - but some of those places will be lucky to hit 1 start... We stayed at the Robinhood, which is just outside the city limits at about $125 a night. Like something out of the 1950s but kinda fun and the folks running the place were very nice.
Only down side were a couple of bad trips in turf races that could have paid for the whole trip if things had gone a little differently....
Again - thanks for all suggestions.

Any other waterfalls fairly nearby?
Was thinking of maybe going up to Lake Placid as well.

Hi Jolt,
It's not the Niagra, but they have a Falls there. If you take 9N out of Saratoga going toward Glens Falls, there are a number of small towns along the way. About mid-way through you will enter Lake Luzerne....right in the heart of this small town they have white water rafting and there is a small Falls there, very small but scenic.
just a note of interest, the waterfall that you go over on your way into Glens Falls (right at the city limits) on rt 9, is the same waterfall that figures into the story (and movie) The Last of the Mohicans. apparently you can see the cave behind the falls, but i've never been down to look.
