The economy is not the same everywhere, and can't paint every situation with the same brush.
Here in Western Washington there are openings in the nursing field, but because of licensing requirements, hardly anyone qualifies. Other than that, if there is one opening at McDonalds, there are hundreds of people applying for it.
Where I work, around January of this year, HR posted an opening for a Senior Financial Analyst at 9am. By eleven, they had to take it down, they were overwhelmed with applications.
And it is not President Obamas' fault. It's the result of the catastrophic administration of Bush and his cronies.

My husband has to work 50 days straight every single shift, 12 hours a day with no days off because the people that are hired then get fired because :
1. Can't pass a urine test
2. Can't do the job right
3. WON'T GO TO WORK AND POST STUPID THINGS ONLINE

I wouldn't look at the rate, I would look at the idiots that get the job and can't or won't maintain there position. I am so sick of people who won't pass their urine tests. And yet these idiots contribute to the umemployement rate.
The company that he works for has full medical, visiion, dental everything including the Benny card with Child Care included, 401 K retirement. Yet no one wants to work the work!
   :!:

Your husband & my husband have the same experience at work - except on opposite coasts. He always comes home shaking his head about the lack of work ethic . . . and how the very few who DO know how to work have to carry the load for the very many who don't know how to work (or don't care to show up for work).

When I go to certain meetings I am the only white woman in the room.... I am in the minority being a US citizen and I am one of a few whose name you would recognize. I am most likely going to get my walking papers only because I made the mistake of being on the "takeover" end by a company who only cares about headcount. They do not care if they cannot honor a state subpeona and have to pay a million dollar fine because they laid off the person that knows... this they can just write off in the general ledger.

One year before my husband was diagnosed with cancer he was sent packing and other than a few consulting jobs could not find work. This, the person that Cisco said built the world's most advanced network, was unemployable because most american companies falsely believe an "accredited" college in another country has smart people who can do the job for 1/4. It's actually a joke and would be like our government deciding that Camden and Newark NJ had the highest ranked school test results and then trumpeting those results to another country in an effort to get them work.

This is the world of IT and data and most of it is not even under US control anymore.

try sales

companies are always looking for people that can sell and there are many sales jobs where a certain amount of grey is a positive; i.e., what 50 YO wants a 25 YO telling him where he should invest his money?/

Sales can be tough but if you work at it it can also be rewarding.

from my experience, for those willing to do the gut check, there can be great opportunities that are realized only when the previous ties (chains) are severed. People can be extremely resilient and that very resilience (read confidence - born of experience) is what is inspiring to potential employers or customers.

Finally found a home for last TB from january load!!!...They are picking him up next sunday. And i gave him away to a dear friend whose horse just passed away(lucky for Omerta, not so lucky for the poor soul). So let's calculate: picked up at track for free, paid for border and health $210.00 plus transport,6 months of stall and turn out 1 hr a day, feeding (put over 100 pounds on 16.2 hands frame),care, worm, feet(needed lots of work) Xrays and vaccines last week and finally free to good home....Hummmm.And trainers call me every week to sell me horses.I still have 4 unsaleables(cripples, crazy or old)...So sorry cannot help anyone for now.I have to help myself, family of 3 humans,10 horses,8 cats(all neutered),4 dogs(all neutered) and a parrot all or almost all rejects from other homes(except 3 horses and one dog)...Have a nice summer all of you,off to work i go...
