Don't know much about LA, NY or NJ programs but do know these foals could also become WVBRED if dropped in WV and the mare is bred back to a WV stallion.

The PA government has already shown an interest in the PABRED money but I think the WVBRED program is on pretty solid ground, except our only grass track is in trouble.

Hey Griff -

What is the story with the MNR grass track. Ran on it a few years ago and thought it was ok? What's going on?

Not really up to date on Mountaineer but some of their trainers have moved to Charles Town.. Seems like there is a new or newer track north or NE if Pittsburg that is sucking the like out of Mountaineer

not really sure, and when called on it, I can not back up my statement Mountaineer is in trouble.

I think griff was referring to Colonial Downs in VA, re the grass track in trouble.

Mountaineer has suffered the vagaries of political machinations, like all places with slots, with fluctuating purses at the whim of the politicians "deciding" just how much of the slots revenue the track actually gets, in accordance with their own political interests and "state need" - and the air there is just awful. I ran a filly there (and had the GREAT pleasure of meeting our very own wilf) and it seems like a still, yellow, sulfuric cloud is always over the place and it smells industrial. I would imagine on heavy atmospheric days it could make your eyes run a bit. Personally I could not imagine spending months on end there, breathing that kind of air. So I think that track needs money to get horses/trainers..

It shares its horsemen with Presque Isle, Colonial, Beulah, etc. Mountaineer gets shippers, when the money is good and on the times when its card is the best around. We shipped there because there was nothing right around us at the time the filly was ready that paid any money (I think wasting a race by running at River Downs is just ridiculous).
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Nope

referring to Mountaineer.

Last time I looked Colonial Downs only raced 40 days a year. A really cracker jack facility; however, ----

My partners and i are interested in finding out if there are any Ontario black type mares or any Ontario black type producers that are looing for new homes.

Any suggestions as to how to research this?

The CTHS has a sales page on its website You might try looking there. If you want to wait a bit, the Mixed Sale is December 8, 2012. They will be giving them away, literally, that day. :(

A few years back I stopped sending mares to KY to be bred, the ONT SIRED program looked like the way to go. We were finally getting nice stallions to breed to and things were looking good as far as I could see. Nobody saw this one coming.

Now I have weanlings, yearlings, two year olds and three in-foal broodmares at home. No idea what to do next.

What's your take on the sale so far? Averages from first day down 20+%. I saw a number go for close to the upset price - and this is the select sale, can't imagine many US buyers willing to trek North for Ontario breds in this climate.

I'd bet that the horses that got no bid or that sell for close to the upset price did not vet clean. Overall the sale was down which was to be expected but we did have some that sold well. Today they sold an English Channel out of a Horse Chestnut mare for $275,000 today.. I was not expecting that.

Could have been worse for sure. Hip 217 went very low for what looked good on paper.

TheSTAR.com web site reports; "its expected two-thirds of Ontario tracks will close---"

& headlines to this 09/05/12 story says 13,000 horses could be destroyed in 1203 if Ontario racing industry folds.

13,000is a lot of horses; just how may race tracks are there in Ontario?

I think there is something like 17 tracks in Ontario. We have a large Standardbred population which I'm afraid I don't know too much about.

I think the majority of the 13,000 horses they are talking about would be of the Standardbred variety. Also it might not be fair to say we have 17 tracks sine many of those Standardbred facilities are closer to a Fair Circuit than anything else and shouldn't be counted alongside Woodbine and Mohawk in my opinion.

Woodbine and Ft Erie are the only two TB tracks in Ontario and Woodbine actually hosts Harness Racing as well. We also have one Quarterhorse track (Ajax Downs).

perhaps 1000 +/- per track is really that many when you count the conduit that is feeding them

Still, it looks like the Canadian slaughter houses are going to be doing a brisk business for a while..

Then when NY, PA and others follow suit they will have already ramped up. Looks like there are going to be some well fed French.

Really? I don't find anything funny about the prospect of having to dispose of thousands of horses.
