Found a link to Personal Ensign:
http://horseracing.about.com/library/blpensign.htm

from this link:
"Personal Ensign was foaled and raised at Claiborne Farm in Lexington, KY. She began her career winning twice as a two-year-old, her maiden win coming by 13 lengths. While preparing for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (Gr I) in 1986, she broke her left hind leg in two places. Five screws were inserted to assist in healing and to keep the bone intact. "

Personal Ensign's fracture was a hind leg, believe it was the right hind just above the fetlock.

Considering that the front legs receive the vast majority of the pounding, her injury being in a hind limb probably had a lot to do with her recovery and subsequent performance at the same level.

By the way, I think I was mistaken when I said "both" in reference to Personal Ensign and Bayakoa. I do not remember Bayakoa suffering a similar injury.

Hi Roving Boy,

You're not the first person that I've heard confuse injury with Bayakoa. Perhaps the image of Go For Wand that's now fused with her.

Regards,

Now I remember. I don't think I ever knew that it was a hind leg. I would be scared to let any horse run competitively with screws and plates in a leg, but I'm a wuss.

Work Schedule

Postby mary syers » Fri Jul 29, 2005 2:12 pm

We all know that AA worked long in preperation for the classics. does anybody know if he also worked hard short distances? It is common knowledge that long, slower works build muscle and wind, but it takes speed to remodel bone. The conventional wisdom is that a hard work of even a 1/4 mile does more to remodel and strengthen bone than 4 miles at 3/4 speed. Mary Syers
