Texas had 13% less live foals in 2008 which was 13% below 2007. Oklahoma had a 17.1% increase.
Texas= 1213 in 07 and 1055 in 08
Oklahoma = 601 in 07 and 704 in 08
its interesting that most states were down.

Just think how valuable those Tex-bred babies will be if we get slots, and how cheap they will be if we don't.

Seriously, more and more Texas breeders are just giving up. If we can manage to keep our tracks open, and not lose too many race days then the problem may be to have enough Texas breds to fill the races. It is really sad. As we both know a lot of our horses are running out of state. There may be more defections in the current economy. Let's hope that things will improve and that there will be enough stallions left to pay into the Stallion Stakes fund.

Thanks Roger, I am doing well -- all things considered. Thank God for Medicare. I sold my yearling Sand Ridge colt, and still have my Uncle Abbie filly. I have two mares in foal for next year and am hoping for the best.

I had logged on this morning to post this link to a story about the efforts to rescue cattle on the Gulf coast. Compared to those Texans, I have no problems.

there was not much interest in that topic. I think we'll breed her, but what she really needs is a stallion that throws class and heart. The ones that I can afford don't seem to have that trait in the degree I need it.

Good luck and too bad we lost Capote's Prospect. Steve probably would have worked with you and CP definitely passed on the traits you want. Ran into a board member yesterday at LAD and there is a meeting this week. Interesting to see what comes of it.

I got my Texas Thoroughbred magazine this week. Denis has done a great job as usual, but they keep getting thinner and thinner. It was sad to see the ad about the complete dispersal of McDermott Ranch. There are fewer and fewer big breeders every year. The list of Texas stallions looks long, but only a small number of them are getting mares in double didgets -- none in Texas getting in the hundreds.

Roger, I suspect that if you can figure out which stallion you want to breed your mare to, that you would have no trouble making a good deal this next season.

The TTA has done a good job of building a stronger coalition with the HORSE group, and we need to hope it will make a difference this time. It is an uphill fight for sure.

Thanks ladies, do either of you know if Swamp is still in Texas? I'm looking at Sand Ridge, but I would like to see more of his babies run, Chief Three Sox is too big for my little girl, but the price is right, if you have some ideas for Pepper Meant to Be, please share them. She is just under 16 hands and weighs about 900 lbs and built like a rectangle. She is a little weak in the rear and she is pretty fast and in the mornings she can go a fast mile. We are looking to run her on the grass at Retama going 7.5 or so. She will work a 35 flat all on her own any day of the week.

Roger, the first crop of Sand Ridges is very small. The next 3 are all close to 30 and the quality looks very good.

I know of 3 that are being readied out of the first crop at present, and were it not for bad timing I believe you would find 2 of these in the fillies stallion stakes on Saturday. Champagne Ridge is in the barn of Donnie Von Hemel at Remington and is coming back after shin bucking, and Sand Ridge Express is just going to Retama, as I also believe Pretty & Certain is almost ready. He is stamping his foals with his body type- extremely correct and good bone. I have a weanling filly that I am very happy with, and that mare will be going back to him this year. Roger, Joe's colt got injured and is now turned out. I bred Champagne Ridge and have high hopes she will do well. Her full brother Cypress Creek (2007) was sold. Unfortunately, he will not race since his owner is a dressage trainer. However, I got my price for him, and it speaks well of his presence and movement that the dressage folks were willing to pay more than our racing market. I have a high opinion of Sand Ridge and the foals that I have seen thus far.

Today's Houston Chronicle had a story - in the Sports section I think - that sounded like the "Fall" TB meet at SHRP is in jeopardy of happening. I didn't get to read it as I had an EARLY meeting and was rushing to get out the door this AM.

Is anyone else hearing whispers of "no meet" or "delayed meet" this fall? Heck it's scheduled opening date is over the Thanksgiving weekend and of course there's very little attendance during the lead up to and during Christmas so it begs the issue of why not put off 'opening' until January 1st of 2009 but that leaves Texas breeders with approximately 1/3 fewer - maybe even a higher percentage - of openings for their Texas breds to enter.

Meanwhile SHRP continues to expand their 'concert' offerings beyond when there are live racing dates so I guess it really is a concert venue that happens to co-host horse racing now and then, mostly QHs.

How do they expect to hang onto their long labored for Graded Stakes status for the John Connally BC Turf race????
