I know you're grinning from ear to ear, LSB. And you'll be pulling snapshots out whether anyone wants to see them or not, just like grandkids. I always wear everyone out around me when I have baby pictures. My mares leave for Kentucky next week to get ready for foaling/breeding.

My Good and Tough / Track Wise colt arrived last Thursday. He is really cute and is bay with a big blaze face with high stockings in front. This is the first January foal I have had here at my farm and with the weather being so wet and cold I've had to keep them indoors except for a short turnout. My new foal blanket has really come in handy.

The Good and Tough foal's blanket is the same color as Carharts, you other Okies can probably relate! I forgot how cute the little buggers are.

Two more mares have breeding dates of March 6th and March 8th but I'm thinking that they are going to hang on for a while.

what is red bag?

Postby Kirsten » Tue Feb 01, 2005 6:09 am

i see two of you guys make a comment that your mares delivered Red bag. What exactly does that mean. I figure it has to do with the characteristics of the placenta when it comes out and leads to death of foal. Can someone explain it to me?
I lost a foal last year and i noted quite a reddish hue to the placenta myself but vet never said anything abnormal with it or used that term. Foal died in utero 10 days early and was aborted. thanks Kirsten

My new mare Taylors Hope (Devils Bag) had a nice chestnut Desert Warior colt on Monday! I can not wait to see pictures of him.

LOL, secretlink, that's why I said "if you can". Because although I've seen other people post pictures, I have no idea how to do it.

I thought I was doing well just to figure out the avatar thing.

red bag

Postby sulphurfire » Wed Feb 09, 2005 4:34 pm

Normal foaling occurs in three stages. In stage 1 the mare is restless and displays signs similar to colic. The pain is intermittent and corresponds to the uterine contractions. Stage 1 generally lasts 1 to 4 hours. Stage 2 begins with rupture of the membrane (breaking water), which corresponds with the entrance of the fetus into the birth canal. Stage 2 should average 20 minutes and not exceed 1 hour. If this period approaches 1 hour without delivery, call the veterinarian. Also, if the membrane fails to rupture and a red velvety membrane protrudes from the vagina (red bag), emergency action is indicated, since this indicates premature placental separation. Premature placental separation is a condition where the placenta (afterbirth) becomes detached before the foal's delivery. The placenta is the organ of oxygen exchange for the foal during pregnancy, and premature separation or detachment interrupts this function, placing the foal in danger within minutes.

I hope that answers your question Kirsten.

Uploading pictures. Instructions can be found if you SEARCH the word "upload". Ramona's October 7th post asks the question and my answer follows.

Ironic that you all have figured out the avatars, but I haven't figured any pictures small enough pixels or bytes to produce one.
