Footnotes
ANDLIKETHATHESGONE veered out sharply at the start, had speed five wide then cleared and angled in, set the pace a bit off the rail and won clear under a steady hand ride. PRISON CAPER showed speed outside rivals then stalked four wide, continued outside a rival into the turn and off the inside on the bend and was second best. DOGHOUSE DAVE chased off the rail then outside, went four wide into the turn and bested the others. COMEDY HOUR squeezed back at the start, settled off the rail, split horses into the turn, continued off the rail and went between horses at the wire to improved position. IAM THE TAX MAN had good early speed inside then stalked along the rail and weakened in the stretch. GOVERNOR ARNOLD dropped back outside early, chased off the rail on the turn, came four wide into the stretch and was not a threat. CALL SIGN MAVERICK broke out and bumped a rival, chased between horses then off the rail on the turn and three deep into the stretch and weakened. NAVAL SALUTE stalked between horses, dropped back a bit off the rail on the turn and also weakened. PROUD CHIEF hesitated then hopped to be off behind the field, moved up inside then outside a rival on the backstretch, went three deep on the turn and into the stretch and had little left in the lane. WEEKEND CHARLIE sent between horses early, chased a bit off the rail, fell back on the turn and inside and weakened in the drive. THEFORCEOFMACHONE angled in and saved ground off the pace, came out in the stretch and was done early.

I name every filly I purchase after my wife, Nicole.

Nicoleismyagent- my wife is a entertainment attorney

Careerwithnicole- 2YO filly out of Cat's Career and it seems like I spent a career being married to my wife.

Nicoleonthewire- 2YO filly out of Birdonthewire. I think that is the worst of the three so far but at the time I thought it was clever.

I plan on purchasing a few more fillies to race next year so I will have more horses with Nicole in the name.

Nicoleadance? Nicolemachine? Kind of a cute premise naming all the horses after the spouse. I like that.

Thinking back on some inspiring names I've heard....Many years ago there was an own son of Secretariat running at Albuquerque. He was the spitting image of his sire, and his name was Image Of A Legend. Other than a convincing win the day I was watching, the horse never did much on the track. But I sure loved his name.

What the hell does that mean anyway? I really only hear it in Stock Horse circles and can NEVER figure out what "own son" refers to. I always thought it meant "homebred".

I believe it means that the horse really was a son of Secretariat and not something else like a grandson. I know Quarter Horse people use that phrase, though I have no idea why. You would think that simply saying he was a son would be sufficient. :?:

Monica,

If you are up at Saratoga and hear Sam play "The Lonely Bull", you know he's been out with me the night before. I have a good story about me asking Barry Schwartz to make that the official song of the Travers, complete with the whole Maraichi band. Needless to say, it didn't fly.

Sam is a great guy and many people don't realize he practices intensely and is maybe one of the best horse buglers we will ever see. Jay Cohen is also good at SA, he is from Cherry Hill NJ.

I like when an owner takes the sire and dam, and does something clever with it. I am trying to name 2 horses RIGHT NOW, and it aint easy. I do NOT like names with run ons, like THISISMYHORSESNAME type thing.

Here is what i consider simple, elegant brilliance:

Sire: KINGMANBO
Dam: DIXIE ACCENT

Name of the resulting filly? MUMBO JUMBO

Anyone wanna take a shot at a name for my horse? Here's one im having a hard time with  :

Sire: Broad Brush
Dam: Omi
Its a filly.
(the Omi throws me off, so im trying all sorts of things like My Oh My, which i like but is taken).

Thought? Thanks...

Talking to John Sadler

Postby louis finochio » Wed Nov 24, 2004 5:10 pm

I told John Sadler that Benchmark is one of the top 3 stallions in Calif. John and I are good friends I met John years ago when he was the stable foreman for David Hoffmans. I am happy to see John claim justlikethathesgone. When I see John I will tell him about his claim, because he didnt have any Benchmarks in his barn before now.

Omi Broad. Say it fast, sounds like "Oh My God"

I just think falling back on the sire/dam thing should only be done as a last resort. I like the totally original names more than smashing two parts of the parents names together.

But then .. I am absolutely 100% against naming a human after its parents, too.

edit

BTW ... you're giving someone with my ... colourful ... vocabulary license to come up with names that might reflect "Oh My" and "Broad"?

Tis a very dangerous thing you are doing there.
