SKIMMING ~ first crop what do you all think?

Postby Citation. » Tue Nov 23, 2004 11:41 am

I was wonder what Californians thought about Skimmings first crop foals, and what his potential is of being a promising sire?

I heard that although he is small and not so correct that his babies are tall and correct, for the majority.

WHAT NO OPINIONS !

I at least thought Michael and Sam would have kind of opinion.
Ok so you haven't seen any of his foals. What do you think of him as a sire? His race record is awesome, beat some of the best horses of his time.

Well I'll start. Last year I looked at him for a French Deputy mare. I was drawn to his race record although I was a little concerned about the confluence of Northern Dancer in the first five generations of the mating. That however isn't what made me decide against him. He is not the most physically possessing of stallions. If he is not siring to type, that's a good thing in my mind but I wonder how successful a sire will be if he consistently throws something he is not. We all know about Nijinsky and Northern Dancer but most Northern Dancers looked like Northern Dancer, Bold Rulers looked like Bold Ruler, Seattle Slew resembled Slew etc etc.

Anyway I passed although I certainly hope the best for him. California needs more good sires.

SIRE OF SIRES

Postby louis finochio » Wed Nov 24, 2004 7:28 am

Nureyev has been a sire of sires, so this is a big plus for Skimming. Time will tell the tale of Skimming fate.

Maybe. Take out Theatrical and then recognize that Stravinsky's and Fasliyev's stars have fallen considerably. I see a lot of names like Joyeaux Danseur, Rio Verde, Atticus, Spinning World, and Zilzal. Some of those stallions were very expensive flops.

Even Theatrical was a bit of an anomaly since he was propped up by a lot of Paulsen mares and was as much a private success as a public one. I'm not so sure the Nureyev factor is a plus except--and this is ironic--Unusual Heat has been hot in California.

Sire of sires

Postby louis finochio » Wed Nov 24, 2004 8:48 am

Nureyev is a sire of sires as his following sons have made their mark in the breeding shed. ZILZAL---THEATRICAL---SPINNING WORLD---PEINTRE CELEBRE---SOVIET STAR---STATELY DON---POLAR FALCON---WOLFHOUND---STRAVINSKY---GREAT COMMOTION---ALWUHUSH---ROBIN DES PINS.

Nureyev still has the 99--00--01--crops to add to his successful sons that have made their contribution in the stallion dept.

Spinning World

I wouldn't give up on Spinning World yet with 3 Group One performers this year.

Nureyev, like most sons of Northern Dancer have had a very tough task though very good sires and broodmare sires themselves to get successful sons at stud.

I have two Skimming weanlings. Both are big, correct and good bodied individuals. I returned thier dams to him, but one (the better one, unfortunately) lost the pregnancy.
