Top Equine Medications used and cost

Postby wgc517 » Sun Jan 14, 2007 10:51 am

I am trying to build a list of the most widely used Equine meds and their cost. Please submit the following info.

Drug name and strength
dosage used
How much do you use in a month
what are you paying

The reason for this is to help others on this site understand what the cost of the meds should be. I have come across many horsepersons that are being charged hugh amounts of money because they don't have an idea of what it should cost.

I will be happy to respond to anyone who posts on how to save on your medication cost if you supply all of the information above.

I know someone that is being charged almost $400.00 dollars for Zantac (Ranitidine) 300mg for a 1000 tablets. A good price should cost you less than half of that.

Bute-$12 a bottle

Banamine-$60 a bottle

Both of these are purchased at the local dog vet/horse vet

Griff,
Don't use bute. Great anti-inflammatory, bad medicine in people. It has been linked to aplastic anemia in people--a death sentence. Use Aleve or Advil etc. tested safe. Mary Syers

There have been some very sad deaths from jocks and exercise riders that have used bute. Great response at first, sad ending to the stories.

Keep in mind that what you pay at the track for a vet to administer (or dispense) is WAY different than what you pay through a pharmacy. It is not a fair comparison at all. Now, if the trainer is administering it should be less than a vet, but still will be marked up considerably from base price.

A perfect example is wormer - $15/month standard charge. Do you really think they are paying full price for this? I can get it through the catalog for $2.99, but I still expect to pay $15 at the track. It's the cost of doing business.

Feel free to PM me the charges and I can tell you if they are appropriate.
