AT-RISK MARE AT BEULAH - PHOTOS!

Hi guys

We have what I think is an at-risk mare at Beulah named Supermarket Queen. Very sweet horse. The owner needs her gone ASAP since she can't race anymore. He wants to get $500 for her, but he was asking me how much the killers are paying. He can't afford to donate her unfortunately. FYI: She's by Seacliff out of a Formal Dinner mare. We've found the Formal Dinner bloodline to be good for producing sane, sensible, even-termpered horses.

You should talk to some of the ones that got the horses withdrawn from the Fasig-Tipton sale and donated. Maybe they can help you.

If the horse is at risk, why isn't someone talking the stewards at the race track. The horse is for sale, for $800 I might add.

I can't speak for the stewards at Beulah, but I know for a fact that the stewards at Penn National and Charles Town won't get involved with the endless pipeline of horses leaving their backside and going to slaughter. At this point slaughter is legal and therefore no punishable offense has been done.

Nobody cares how many siblings or half siblings they have that sold for big bucks or made big bucks because there is an overflow of outstanding TB horse flesh already out there. What kind of comment is 'the owner can't afford to donate'?

The price of this horse is a lot more realistic than some of the other prices of horses on that canter website. $3K or $4k can buy horse ready to run, not one on the down side, but they want the horse to have a good home.

Fortunately Canter Ohio helps even when some dont think they should.
Canter doesn't set the price only limits how high. They are also trying to find sport and non-racing homes for these horses.

I'm sure if some of these were Tracker Sixto G or Guapazo's you might think the price was too low.

Habitat - If you truly want them to have a good home, it isn't about how much money you make selling them. I would hope they would give the horses to others for a good home.

And yes, unfortunately one of Trackers babies did end up on the Ohio canter website, I just saw him there today. He wasn't one that was raised here on the farm, he was one of the very few that someone else bred. He was given to the trainer, and when I tried to get him at Hoosier Park the trainer wanted a ridiculous amount. Now that trainer has trained on him so hard he is injured. Tracker babies are like their daddy, they take time to mature, thus the reason only two of his babies have started (both 4 yr olds). And the reason we have 10 three yr old that haven't started by Tracker.

Babies that have been bred on this farm are all protected to the best of our ability. We are responsible breeders.

I would think mlwinter if you dislike these types of threads you would just by-pass them and not bother critisizing those that are interested in helping find these horses good homes. The old saying "don't kill the messenger" applies here - they are putting forth the information and doing what they can.

This horse is named Trail Ride. He is on the track now. Hit the board a couple of times;)

That is not for Canter Ohio to decide. I know that many times Canter Ohio does place horses in approved homes for minimal costs that have been donated to them. Trainer listed ads are a service provided by Canter, but they do not set the prices other than to cap it.

I dont doubt that you are a responsible breeder. I only take issue with you interfering with a rescue organization trying to place a horse when someday that horse could be one of your own product.

The Breeder of Supermarket Queen is Lisa Stewart. The mare was bred in Florida. She apparently owns and races as well.

I've called a couple of numbers I thought might be Ms. Stewart's, but they were not.

Giving a horse away does NOT guarantee a good home. In fact, I believe it puts it in GREATER jeopardy of ending up being sold for meat.

Just like there needs to be accountability for breeding these animals...owners need to be held accountable too.

This mare raced just about every two weeks for 5 months straight and they wonder why she didn't hold up. But SHE gets to pay for how the humans behave.

Maybe all these cheap tracks just encourage all this cheap breeding! But try to take them away and everyone screams "victim"! They want THEIR piece of the pie!!!!

Hi, all. Here's more of Supermarket Queen's story. We were told that she has a sore left knee (not x-rayed) so we're not sure what's going on with it. It gets sore (+ heat) after they gallop her 2-3 days in a row. Trainer doesn't want to push her and advised the owner unless he is willing to lay her up for 6 mos.-1 yr, get surgery (if needed), etc., he should cut his losses and find the horse a good home. So apparently the owner is weighing all of his options. I have arranged to meet him at Beulah Saturday morning if she isn't purchased by then. (I'm aware that Sugar Creek is Friday.) I've got calls in to some folks to see if they can help. If we can raise funds to buy her, we'll be ecstatic. And she'll get a good non-racing home.

Just a note on the prices on the trainer listings: $800 OBO is the minimum price CANTER will list a horse for. She should actually be listed as $800 OBO and we're making that change. The lowest claiming tag at the track is the highest price a trainer can list. It actually has to be less than the lowest claiming tag, so at Beulah it's $3499.

Supermarket Queen's dam, "Formal Dawning" was last bred to "PUT IT BACK" in 2006, after her foal by Full Mandate died in 2006.

The dam has not changed hands, publicly, so it "appears" Lisa Stewart still owns the mother and MAY be interested in helping the first foal she ever bred.
