NAMING FOALS ADVICE

Postby Citation. » Fri Nov 26, 2004 6:01 pm

When naming foals for people, please check with the Jockey Club to see if the name has already been taken. The name CHANTEY cannot be used since another name very similar but spelled a bit differently is already in use. BRUSHSTROKE has the same problem. Many names that have been given are already taken. I think it is great everyone is so helpful and so clever, so don't stop.

You'd be surprised what the JC has allowed to pass sometimes in the way of similar names -- there was one case back in the 1940s when the fillies Athenia and Athene ran 1-2 in a race. But it's always best to play it conservatively and submit other choices as well if you're going to put in a name that's sounded or spelled fairly close to something that's currently in use.

I have a feeling after 60+ years they have cracked down a bit on naming horses that is what I have experenced anyway. Good luck though, doesn't hurt to try.

Tricks within a name to remember pedigree etc

Postby Jorge » Sun Nov 28, 2004 7:01 am

I would like to brainstorm a little on tricks that may be used when naming a horse in order to remember its breeding rightaway without having to look for other documents. I have learned that its a good thing when the number of mares is high.

For example, lets suppose the sire is Native Dancer and the mare is Grey Flight, by Mahmoud. Well we can use the prefix "Nati" with "Flim" ("Fli" for "Grey Flight" and "m" for "Mahmoud". They names may come "Nativar Flimette", "Natirose Flim", "Natiral Flimsy" etc. I had a friend who came up with interesting sounding names and he always remembered its pedigree several generations back.

Another trick may be to put a couple of letter at the end of the name with each letter standing for important information. Foe example: "A" meaning "bay coming from the stallion "x", "B" chestnut coming from stallion "x". In synthesis, your favorite lineages or "nicks" etc.

Would appreciate opinions from everyone, especially breeders.

Thank you very much for your ideas or experiece.

Tesio always gave his horses artists' names beginning with the same letter as the name of the foundation mare of the family; thus, the descendants of Nogara got names beginning with "N," the descendants of Romanella got names beginning with "R," et cetera.
