Mare that produced the most derby starters?

Postby Topsmeade » Wed Mar 14, 2007 4:24 pm

I was inspecting Millennium Wind the other day and was thinking it was pretty amazing his dam had three derby starters (Tossofthecoin and Charasmatic). Any one know what the record is?

Off the top of my head I can't think of any that also had 3 (I think Rowdy Angel, Fall Aspen, and Never Knock each had 2). I'd be curious to see what you find...

Three is the record, shared by nine mares. :) Bali Babe is by far the most recent...

Ontario, 1865 by Bonnie Scotland had three starters, none placed.

Agnes, 1876 mare by Gilroy, was the most succesful of all. Jacobin & Robespierre each ran third, in 1887 & 1890 respectively, and Macbeth II won in 1888.

Catina, 1867 by Australian, whose runners included 1883 3rd place finisher Lord Raglan.

Inspiration, 1902 by Ayrshire, had three unplaced runners.

Blushing Beauty, 1916 by Cunard, had 1926 place finisher Bagenbaggage, as well as two who finished up the track.

Rose Leaves, 1916 by Ballot, had three unplaced, including future leading sire Bull Lea.

Virginia L., 1917 by McGee, had three unplaced starters.

Marguerite, 1920 by Celt, produced Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox, but also had a pair of unplaced Derby starters (including GF's full brother Fighting Fox).

Hallo,
here are some German broodmares with 2 or more offspring who run in "the German Derby"

Kirschfliege (Kaliber and Kilometer)
Ordinale (Orofino, Ordos and Orfano)
Laurea (Lando and Laroche)
Britannia (Borgia and Boreal)
La Virginia (Lavirco and Laveron)
Majoritat (Monsun and Masterplayer)
So Sedelous (Shirocco, Subiaco, Storm Trooper and Satchmo)
Night Petticoat (Next Desert and Next Gina)
Sacarina (Samum, Salve Regina and Schiaparelli)

Best regards from Germany, Bettina

Yeh Lucy! How do you remember all that? I struggle I'm embarrassed to say to remember sometimes who my mare's dams are - and if put on the spot I'm sure I couldn't name their dam's sires? Does that me lazy, stupid or both?

Even more interesting are the results of the "racing offspring" of
So Sedulous

Shirocco won German Derby 2004
Subiaco was 2nd placed Derby 2000
Storm Trooper was 3rd placed Derby 2003
all 3 were sired by Monsun
and Satchmo (by Surumu) came in last 1999

menawhuile I could do some more checkin
Laurea had one more starter La Donna (Filly)
Locarno (Luigi and Leone)
Prairie Darling (Platini and Paolini)

regards, Bettina

I think it just means you have a life.

As for how I remember, I had a project when I was a kid....I'd found out how many Derby starters there were in every running, and I set about trying to learn who they were - all the names, pedigrees, & finishing order (don't ask me why....my favorite race has always been the Belmont!). This was years before the internet, so I'd find results bit by bit and write them down in a little notebook. I think putting so much work in made the knowledge stick. Doing research for two pedigree websites doesn't hurt.

I appreciate all the compliments on my memory. :D Just don't ask me anything from school, or where I put my car keys, or my brother's birthday...

WOO-HOO! Someone acknowledges I have a life (HA) Sometimes when I am at the farm for days on end except to go to the grocery store or check on my invalid mom I think I don't have a life :) Let's see - does taking care of the mares and filly (and hopefully soon the foals), checking in with my folks and going over to check on them, helping the daughter-in-law with the new grandbaby and taking care of the three year old granddaughter two or three days/nights a week to give her a break and running her back and forth to pre-school, cooking, cleaning, and laundry count as a life - uhhhhh - depends on how you look at it but yep guess I really do have a life that I want :)

And Lucy, I have always done alot better writing things down so no wonder you have a great memory - the computer, calculator, spell check, etc... have certainly deleted many brain cells :)
