Two months ago the group I'm involved with compiled the fastest workouts from each of Barretts' March 2-y-o in training previews since 1999 then correlated them with each horse's career earnings. That review was so widely accepted we decided to conduct a similar analysis for the Barretts' May 2-y-o Sale.

I have worked around Tb most all of my life, and over the years one will develop an eye for an exceptional Tb or sale topper.
The last 2 sales toppers at Barretts were selected by their conformation, intelligence and character, I dont have the deep pockets of Coolmore, so I will have to wait and see if those 2 toppers will have the heart and mordant to become one of the ones.
Great sport even if one does not have the $$ to play the game.

Those without sin cast the first stone.

Top sellers in 2 year old sales are based on fast works and who the sire is. That is about it. the sale was a flop, with over a hundred outs and tons of buybacks.
I know
I heard the trainers and buyers 'say' they looked for a very balanced and mature individual, but the results showed fast works and sire were key!

Feeds more questions....
Wondering about a subset view of this study.... Ignoring the prices paid for the 2YO's (I know, you can't really, that's part of the point, etc...)
But regardless, (and I don't really expect anyone to dig these answers up, just doing some cheap hypothesizing...) did the "fastest" set of horses, race more often than a group at the mean work times and the "slow" ones? What's the % of 100K winners in the 3 groups (fast, medium, slow)? Is the % of unraced higher in the speedballs than the rest of the 2YO sale population, than the rest of the yearling sale population?, etc. What other factors could contribute to a speedball not making back their purchase price?
Don't get me wrong, I get the point that the data looks bad as an economic model for owners..... That much is clear.....Well I guess it was clear already and this puts some numbers to the proposition.
Nice work....

Barrett's
56% buy backs or withdrawn at Barrett's May. You have a four in ten chance of selling your horse.
This doesn't count 5,6,7 thousand dollar horses that won't make back their expenses.
Are owners getting the idea that this may not be the best place to buy a horse?
Most of the entrants I would guess have the equivalent of 5 to 10 two furlong races by the time the sale rolls around.
Not a good idea for the two year old body or mind.

Re: Barrett's
tbrace: "Are owners getting the idea that this may not be the best place to buy a horse?"
Here, here, tbrace. Even with escalating sale prep techniques, yearling auctions still provide the biggest bang for a buck for most buyers. I'm not talking about Coolmore, the Sheikhs, and the other bazillionaires to whom price is no object, but for the rank and file stables looking for solid racehorses.
Imagine how much better off our industry might be if thousands of our better 2yo's weren't pushed into world record speed records by their 24th month? Imagine if 2yo Sales strictly enforced a "2 mile clip" policy? Imagine if 2yo racing didn't begin until August 1, or later?
Those are the lyrics; who's got the music?

yearlings
Even B. Baffert once said, "If you want to hit the home run, you have to buy the young horse" (he was talking about yearlings.
This holds true for the triple and double, also.
And, they generally cost less than the 9 and 4 two year olds, many of whom never see the winners circle.

Along the lines of your question Michael, and comments by others, I came across the following article from the Thoroughbred Reveiw Stallion Watch website. You can find it under "Articles" - it's the most current offering there.

I think part of the reason a big chunk of the horses are withdrawn in a 2 year old sale is that racehorses aren't widgets and as you progress through the sales (weanling to yearling to juvenile) more and more is expected by the buyers until in the end, the horse needs to preview in a decent time, look good doing it and Xray OK which is a taller order than some folks realize going in. Lots of horses get hurt just trying to get to the preview and some more don't make it through without breaking to some degree. Some work in such a pedestrian fashion, they get no action before the sale so the consignor just withdraws trying to put together a private deal. (And some of those are lulus. I once saw a horse sell as a yearling in October for $3000. By April, a trainer was trying to put together a syndicate of small investors that valued this horse at $25,000. As far as I could see, nothing much happened except this horse got broke. I'm sure some of the people who buy their horses back are thinking of doing the same thing if they can just find those investors.)
Anyway, hope always springs eternal but I agree, if you want to sell then sell and cut the bleeding.

Just for grins, since we are dealing with Barretts, I went to their website and downloaded their results for the yearling sale in October. I used the 2003 auctions, since I could find their race records thru 2006, which is thru their 4 year old season. I used the same format at Michael....I chose the top 20 sellers at this yearling sale>
STERLING CAT f. (Event of the year) $160,000 - $95,000 - 5-2

I think Ill take my chance on a 2 year old. The cost of the additional year from a yearling to a 2 year old is already in the purchase price. Buying a yearling, you need to add another $20,000 or so to get them to the races.
