Stallions with Market Appeal @ $5000 to $15000 Fee
Let's distill the very interesting thread that has been running on market appeal of stallions. If you bound the stud fee to the $5,000 to $15,000 range, who do come up with for a top five, considering both younger and/or older stallions?

Right now... if I am "holding" foals... (it changes slightly if we are talking who to breed to):
Officer
Hold That Tiger (although it kills me to include him)
Jump Start
Kafwain
Chapel Royal (another I hate to include)
if given a substitute... Yonaguska or Include
if forced to choose a $5,000... Flatter
if you are giving me seasons... throw out the two Ashford stallions and give me Saarland and Tactical Cat
Older...
Salt Lake
Arch
Surprises...
Sunday Break
Pure Prize

Joe, good for you!
I just don't think you can go wrong with Salt Lake. They run well and they sell well. He is also "due" to get another notable runner soon, and if he does they will sell even better.
I also have always liked him physically. Power and athleticism... I truly hope yours has a lot of good 'ole dad in it.

Well... those Tactical Cats must be doing a good job of holding their breathe...
Average earnings per start... $5,000+, CI 1.61 (to 1.68 AEI), current year CI 1.81. # 9 on second crop sire list (with the 3rd fewest foals). Look for him possibly move toward the top 5 as a 3rd crop sire and look for even more success starting in 2006.
The biggest interesting thing about Tactical Cat is that his foals don't seem particularly fond of running at 2, rather they seem to be doing much better at 3 (and better with a slight distance increase).
2 yr. olds of 2003 only won about $500,000. Current 2 yr. olds $100,000. His total winnings... $2,300,000 (so, $1,700,000 from his 3 yr. olds... which is just a little behind the division leaders Victory Gallop, Stravinsky, and Forestry (who are at about $2,000,000 from bigger crops and/or a higher AEI).
Additionally, the current results for Tactical Cat are based on his first couple crops which weren't as good as his last couple.
Consider, he only has 115 foals of racing age, (only 47 are 2 yr. olds)... yet he currently has 105 yearlings, and 104 weanlings. I believe he also was getting a better class of mare in these last couple crops.
Those numbers indicate there may be significant commercial success on the horizen...
I have said it before, he is one horse and a couple turns away from being catapulted to the next level.
By the way, I also like Menifee, especially as his foals get older, however he doesn't have nearly as big foal crops coming up. So, I am not sure the numbers will "pop" the way Tactical Cat's could. But, he too is one big horse and a couple turns away from stardom... and I don't know that I would bet against Mr. Hancock.
Both stallions represent some risk, but great reward for those "using" them in 2005 and 2006.

Oh, Mike...
Chapel Royal...
He had the one thing everyone looks for, commercially,... speed as a 2 yr. old. His race record was pretty stellar, especially considering what Birdstone was able to achieve later.
His sire has proven to be quite a success story in his own right and the producer of top flight sprinters.
His sire has a couple other sons who are drawing some attention as stallions, and many consider Chapel Royal to be the best of the bunch, with arguably the better pedigree.
He is standing at Ashford, which means he will be a part of their propaganda machine. And, this also virtually assures, in conjunction with his stud fee, that he will "see" 200 mares this year in the Northern Hemisphere alone.
And, finally, Ashford once again has demonstrated that it wants quantity and is willing to offer an attractive fee to get it. I am not sure any other $10,000 stallion standing for the first time in 2005 offers the type of race record and precocious speed as does Chapel Royal.
So... there will be a buzz...
Of course here are the problems... it may be hard to get your mare in when you need to because of his book size.
You need to have one of the better looking ones when you go to sell because there will be 40 others in the same sale. (There will probably be 40 broodmares offered in November in foal to him also.)
He actually may be the "one" to breed to in 2006... if you are planning to sell as yearling. I see him following a path of "Stravinsky meets Successful Appeal" for his first couple years... then we will see.

Hot sires don't stay at that stud fee range for long. Some that still get respect at the sales and are likely good sires or still stir the imagination:

Many other nice stallions are out there, most with little respect for commercial purposes, some highly productive. I even included some of my personal favorites that aren't that popular and left out a lot of great horses. I did check the current status of stud fees on the Thoroughbred Times Stallion Directory, do I likely missed the ones not advertised in that book.

Rocking H
Cees Tizzy
What does everyone think of Cees Tizzy? His fee is in the 5-15 range. He seems to be able to produce the big horse.......
