PA line farms, close to Bel Air, MD

Postby Laurierace » Fri Aug 31, 2007 2:09 pm

The lady where I used to send my mare to foal doesn't have a farm anymore. I am half toying with the idea of keeping her here in MD to foal even though having a MD bred is very undesireable. She aborted at 273 days last year and somewhere in my twisted mind I think if she had been home with me it would have been ok. So now I am afraid to let her leave. She would need to be in PA by October 1 through foaling, she is due Feb 23rd. It does not have to be a racing or even a TB barn to qualify, if I still lived in PA I could have put her in my backyard and that would have counted. Any ideas? I am sorta hoping I can't find anything so I have an excuse to keep her here! Thanks.

That's a tough one Laurie. I know foaling in MD is really not worth it thanks to our inept politicians, but if it would comfort you to have Jess near, then keep her here for your peace of mind. Could Country Life take her in? Bonita?

Have you checked with Barb over at Xanthus..I know she is having phase 1 of a dispersal at the Penn Sale next weekend but I havent heard anything about her going out of business. Of course she isnt all that close to Belair either.
Wish I still had my farm in Stewartstown but of course I left that in 1994..if only!

I can keep her where she is at, I just would end up with a dreaded MD bred. I am not even sure there is going to be MD racing when the baby becomes old enough to run. On the other hand, with all the defections MD racing might be easy picking by then if it still exists. Might even get a walkover in a MD bred stake!

I don't really want her that far away Gerry but thanks anyway for the suggestion. I wish you still had your farm too, I would love for you to babysit my girl for a few months.

What about Dr. Solomon's farm? Pin Oak Lane farm, it's close to the MD line, just up 83. He has Real Quiet etc standing there. I know he foals mares there. Look him up, and he's a vet too, so that's a plus.

That is a good idea, I scoured every inch of his website looking for boarding and foaling prices but couldn't find anything which probably means its out of my price range, but I guess you never know until you ask.

Not necessarily, most farms won't post their fees so no one can undercut them. If his prices are to high, ask him if he knows of any farms in the area where you can go. Most big farms have satellite farms that they deal with.

Now that Winds made me think alittle..you could also ask Marshall Silverman or Dr. Hurtgen for boarding recommendations as well. They are both in the New Freedom/Shrewsbury area.

Maybe our "leaders" in Annapolis and those running the tracks here in MD should listen up. Here's an article on the PA Derby with its first ever million dollar purse:

Just a tad off topic, but very related.

I am racking my brain to come up with one single legitimate reason to keep her in MD. Aside from I will miss her, there just isn't any way to justify it. But what do they care.....

Unfortunately, there is no legitimate reason to have a MD Bred. I've only pin hooked one time, we bought a weanling filly in the Dec. Mixed Sale in 2004 to resell in Oct. Now, we did ok, we paid 1,700 for her and sold her the following Oct. for 13,000. She was a MD bred, she's in training in CA. I just wonder what we would have got if she was a PA or NY bred?

Her name is Milehighkisses. She ran once as a 2yr old, finished in the middle of the pack, but the jockey was trying to get her to switch leads coming down the stretch. She was given some time off (makes me think she might have bucked shins or something) and is now prepping for her first start as a 3 yr old. I thought she looked and moved like a grass horse. So, I think the polytrack should suit her well. She's been working pretty good on it. Did 3/4's in 1:13 n change the other day.
Here's hoping.

You fed her for 10 months and got $4000 less than you paid for her and that is doing ok? Wow, you must have deeper pockets than I do.

I meant 1,700, not 17,000. I made the correction in the post.
