Can you write something.....

Postby Skipitgirl » Tue Sep 25, 2007 5:04 am

On the back of registration papers if you are willing to buy the horse back at anytime in their life when you sell one? Just curious. I just sold a mare and I would like to put something on the back so that if she ends up old and unwanted they will know they can contact me to get her back.

You could have them sign a paper stating that fact. When we got our mare we signed one. I appreciated that they had that, it meant that they really care for their horses. It's something that more people are doing and the rescue operations wish would happen more often.

Just make sure it's typed, dated, if possible notarized, but more importantly make sure they have a signed copy and you have a signed copy.

Interesting question, actually. Since you say you sold a "mare" she is not a racing prospect? If it is on the BACK, it would not be considered defacing the papers, would it?

One of the rescues (can't remember which one now) was offering stickers for that purpose to put on the papers. I emailed and asked for some, but never got a response. I think there was a post on it at sometime on here.

I can see where being able to put in on the reg papers would be favorable because those are the papers ppl will def hold on to. We do that with our great danes. Always a clause that the new owner signs saying the dog returns home to us should they not be able to care for it anymore. I have only sold two horses in my life and each time it was a verbal agreement. But that was a few years ago and ppl forget things. But I also keep tabs on them (god that sounds stalkerish lmao) to make sure all is well. I like the sticker, but I wonder would that be frowned upon by the JC???
trying to come up with something brillant..... this may take a while. :)

I wondered as she is going to a breeding farm in Florida and I didnt think it would defacing the papers if I wrote it on the back since the only ones who would see it are the people who sign the papers over during sales.

We get stickers from Re-Run that we place on the back of the JC papers, that let folks know we'll take the horse back for any reason. Instead of using our own contact info, however, I put our names in care of our state's TOBA, who can direct the seeker to wherever we may be located at the time we're needed.

I don't sell my horses but on the occasions that I have had one claimed from me I hand the new owner or trainer a business card with all my contact information on it and then hand write on the back that I will take the horse back in any condition at any time. Perhaps you could staple something along those lines to the papers?

Most commercial printers can custom-order a roll of small stickers for that purpose, for not a lot of money. The quantity may be more than anyone would ever use, but maybe you can share with a friend or two! :D They can come in just about any color (or clear) and be laminated, so the text can't wear off over time... I think it's a great idea!

When would the papers ever be checked by someone who would have an issue with a sticker? As new papers aren't re-issued when a horse changes hands, I can't imagine the JC having a problem with it...? :?

Stickers, what a wonderful idea! Maybe that should be recommended to TOBA and the NTRA. Heck, even the Jockey Club.

Im pulling this back up.....tonight I received a call from a lady in Florida telling me she adopted a seized TB mare and found my note on her papers. Thats right. The mare I sold, Bet the Farm, was seized along with 100 other mares from the man who purchased her from me. She called to tell me how Betty was starved and neglected before being seized. She told me how this wonderful mare wouldnt let anyone near her. She has hobble marks on her hind legs and basically was terrified of people when they got her. Betty was a wonderful easy going mare. My 4 yr old daughter at the time used to groom and pet her. Long story short Betty now has a wonderful loving home with this couple. They have had her over 2 years now. She said she put off calling me because she was afraid Id want her back or that I may be close enough to " come get her". After a one hour conversation I was in tears knowing that she came so close to an untimely end. However, I am so happy now that I put that note on her papers. At least I know she is in a good home now. I hadnt heard any of this but she is sending me the articles and pics of her when they got her and now. She also said that if she ever has to give her up she will send her back to me since I loved the mare enough to make an attempt to keep track of her. I only hope the other horses found wonderful homes too.

That is a wonderful, happy happy ending for that mare! So glad she is in a loving home now.

WOW! So glad about how this turned out, but it's depressing that your mare did fall through the cracks temporarily. Best laid plans, right?

Even though the note didn't work out quite the way you intended, I'm glad that it did work after a fashion and you know your mare is in a safe and happy home now.
