The Homestretch

Postby spex4me » Thu Jan 03, 2008 11:08 am

This kind of stemmed from another thread that posted about the SC throughbred retirement/rescue.

Is this movie out....even on video? Has anyone seen it? For God's sake I am a really pissy person but I watched the trailer and started sniffling like a 4 year old  . It has peaked my interest. I always liked the idea that inmates were UTILIZED with training Mustangs, and this is awesome that the TB's get to have a similiar second chance. I vaguely remember a movie based on this scenario, but I can't remember the title right now either. But I thought this would be a cool documentary.

Too cool! We ran a horse at Grants Pass Downs and had a blast! I even saw our old trainer in the trailer.

A couple of years ago, a film maker was doing a film about the folks who work on the track. The Backside was the working name.
I contacted the film maker of this one to see if this is the resulting film. things change, after all.
My daughter had a blast being followed around by a camera crew that summer at GPD!
I will definitely see this one.
Well behaved women rarely make history.

Don't know if it's been in theatres or not, but I haven't seen it around on video. Unfortunately.

Sure would be nice if both it and the documentary about the Derby made their way into the local theatre...

There was an Animal Planet movie a few years back, called Big Spender - don't know if that's the one you're thinking of. It was pretty mediocre. The story was supposedly based on a horse I knew named Banker's Jet, but the story wasn't that similar - sort of a Dreamer vs. Marias's Storm thing, I guess.

I'll try to find out where a copy can be obtained or where it can be seen. It apparently follows several prison programs including the one in South Carolina.

The horse at the beginning of the trailer, King's Honor, is quite a poster boy for their documentary.

They mention that he was a horse who didn't live up to his pedigree and man they weren't kidding.

King's Honor is a 1996 gelding by A.P. Indy out of Great Lady M. making him a half-brother to Horse Of The Year Lady's Secret.

He was a $275,000 RNA at Keeneland July (and that's actually very cheap for that pedigree indicating he had some problems right off the bat)

He made 10 starts for Aaron and Marie Jones in the barn of Bob Baffert and won a $32,000 Maiden Claimer at Del Mar and a Starter Allowance.

Then he was claimed for $16,000 out of his 11th start in the Baffert Barn and he made two starts in claiming races at Santa Anita with trainer Mike Mitchell but he never hit the board so his owners transferred him from Mike Mitchell to trainer Eddie Truman and ran him for $6,250 claiming at Bay Meadows Fair. He was second in that race and was claimed by trainer Tom Roberts.

He then was off the board for $8,000 at Sacremento and next ran for $4,000 at Fresno. He won that race and was claimed by trainer Dan Harrell. In that barn he was off the board in 10 of 11 starts, including a DNF, in cheap claimers at Los Alamitos, Golden Gate, Stockton, Pleasonton, and Solano, and Santa Rosa but he was claimed for $3,200 out of the Santa Rosa race by trainer Gary Greiner. He managed 3 wins and a second in 6 starts for that barn until he was claimed from them for $2,500 at Grants Pass by trainer Juanita Jones. He had 3 wins, a second, and a third for that barn until he was claimed for $3,500 by trainer Gerald Robinson. In that barn he had two wins and a fourth in 3 starts before being claimed for $1,600 by trainer Dennis Hurley. His last 17 starts seem to have been made in the barn of Dennis Hurley where he managed 2 wins, a second, and 3 thirds in those 17 starts. His last start was for $3,200 at Grants Pass, where he was third, and that was on July 4th, 2006. He ended his racing career with 13 wins in 80 starts, but earnings of less than $64,000 (most of his good runs came in races at places like Grant's Pass with purses around $2,000 - hard to accumulate much in the way of earnings running in races like that).

We can't really tell from the movie trailer, but he hopefully found his way from the track to one of these prison rescues.

Oh god I think I remember that movie Big Spender now..... I think I was laughing b/c the acting was so bad during scenes that weren't supposed to be funny (see I told ya I was pissy!! )

And my god I would hope that King's Honour has a nice retirement home now. Jesus that horse went through a gazillion hands. And that woman in the trailer. Do you know who that is? She came off as pretty cold, but I also know a snippet of a statement doesn't define someone on a whole either.

Anyway I would love to see this , it looks good, and it regards two things I love to see. Inmates not sitting on their ass watching TV and lifting weights, and Ex racers getting an opportunity to show they aren't washed up just yet. Not to mention I think animals do bring about a compassion in people that they probably never knew existed. :)

I got an e-mail reply from the filmmaker:

XXX QUOTE

Thanks for the interest! It's in the process of being sold to cable right now, so I will put you on the list for notification about where it will show. Meantime, there's a screening in Arkansas February 16, if you're nearby.

XXX END QUOTE

So we'll have to wait and see where it goes. I'm thinking IFC the Independent Film Channel would love to have it.

She didn't say where in Arkansas, but the Oaklawn meet will be in full swing at that time in Hot Springs and if you've ever been to Oaklawn you know that the entire focus of the community is on the race meet much like at Saratoga in the summer. So I think a screening of her film there at that time would go big.

If you go try and get a room at The Arlington.

They have available the "Al Capone" suite where he used to always stay (in old gangster movies when they talk about 'little Chicago' they're talking about Hot Springs, Arkansas).

Or they also have a suite where Bill Clinton stayed (there's probably still a sign on the door that says if this room is a rocking don't come a knocking).

Or there's a suite where Ronald Reagan stayed.

Spex -

Did you ever make it to see this film? I hit their website and it looks like it is showing on television/cable channels in some areas. There's a link that shows the broadcast schedule.

They also have a DVD for sale.

I think I watched this on TV about two-three weeks ago. It was likely on the Animal Channel? (but I can't be sure)....

It was on PBS about a month ago. Go to pbs.org to see if it is scheduled again.

Spex, did you ever make it to Oaklawn Park? I love the place, was there many years ago. The people are wonderful there and the racing is great.
