Day Rate for Breaking Horses

Postby ponytime » Fri Jan 25, 2008 4:55 pm

I am curious to know what the going day rate to break a 2 year old is in different areas. I am trying to buy a two year old to go along with my older horses that I have racing in florida.. I am actually open to where they are broke and start training if the price is right because the horse in question is a kentucky bred not a florida bred like my others. Thanks for any help.

I am located in the Louisville, Ky area, I pay $46 per day, but some are less expensive. In Lexington the going rate is 40-45 per day last time I checked which was last year.

Merryland in MD charges $55 a day, but that is a first-class facility that can basically take them to the races. In California, we have one farm in Northern California that charges $28 a day. When they come from there, they are broke but they are not used to horses breezing toward them, so when they go to the track, they are always a little wiggly. Here's a link to farm rates and services in California complied by Don Engel:

Most places are in the high 40's to low $50's. Some of the best places have been lost to development.

$50 a day in South Carolina (our cost but price would vary depending on which training center you use)

$30/day in Louisiana (which I thought was cheap, but based on some of these other responses, I guess not).

$45/day in Kentucky for a top flight training center.

IME, you pay more for perks like the ability to publish official works. And, someone who can get the horse ready to race vs. broke and galloping generally charges more.

In addition to day rate, can anyone estimate the length of time at the breaking center? I know there's no hard-and-fast rule, but what's everyone's experience been?
