Country Supply www.countrysupply.com carries some good inexpensive poly tape that comes in both black and white. The black is perfect for lining the top board of paddocks where cribbers reside.

What size are you looking at getting? We like and use 1/2 inch poly tape with 3 strands spaced roughly 14 inches apart. We have 3 board wood for the paddock fronts (i.e aesthetic purposes and the electric runs behind it before the wood fence ends and it is just electric strands on the back perimeters) We found out the wider the tape the more ice or snow it collects, not to mention if it's windy thicker tape is like a parasail.

Poly Tape

Hi, Thanks very much for your response to my question. I am in the caribbean , so no worries with snow here  . Your point about the wind is a valuable one. I am thinking the 1 1/2 tape maybe the best size to use. I am more concern about the breaking strength, numbers of wires and the durability of the poly tape.

I was concerned about breaking strength too. But for some odd reason it seemed to make sense to go with one about 250 lbs. I really think that if said horse is driven to run through the shock then there is probably no poly tape that will stop him. I swear mine can even smell it, and I had one persistent little bugger who would literally push into a wood fence until it gave one way or another. The electric....well it took him 3 zaps to the nose and well his days of greener grass on the other side are over!

Now with a relatively low break point I'll use this example: My filly who sometimes lacks common sense rolled into the electric fence and caught her back legs on the bottom. In a matter of 3 seconds she was up and running with the stuff still attached to one rear leg. She ran full speed ahead about 20 yards it snapped she kept going. I went out with my splicer, cut and spliced it at the break to clean it up and I was back in business. Fixed in under a minute.

She had a tiny little "tape burn" to show for her ordeal. Had that tape been stronger I fear it may have perhaps had a substantial cut to her leg. Most of the time if they get shocked they run back not through it. I have never had any animal run through it, or even attempt it.

Our 1/2" has 5 wires and even though most say they can last 10 years plus, I find five to seven is a good time to replace it to make sure conductivity is strong as well as the tape integrity itself. Plus it takes us less than 30 minutes to string 7 acres with 3 strands and cost about $75.00 total.

Good luck and enjoy!

This is where electro BRAID is dangerous.....I have seen more than a few horrific injuries from it.

Yeah I have seen scarring courtesy of electrobraid hence I went with weaker poly. I know my horses are not the brightest bulbs in the box at times! :)
