Mystical White

Postby Derby Lyn » Thu Mar 06, 2008 2:33 pm

I found this while looking at some of my previous mares. I use to own Adagal before I was breeding and I did eventing with her. She had a nice foal by Bright White. http://www.pedigreequery.com/mystical+white

Pretty, wish we could see all of her!

Mystical White is a good example of what I call, a "stained white". This is the kind of horse that makes a registry put them a label of "roan" or even "gray", even though, everyone knows that genetical grays can't skip a generation.

For that reason I always propose that these kind of horses be called "stained white" instead of "bay", "chestnut" etc. If the horse is more "bay" than white, then my proposition is to call them "marked bay", "marked chestnut", etc. If the horse is more "white" than bay or chestnut, then call him "stained white".

If registries don't want to use two terms for the white coat color ("white" and "stained white"), they may consider the "catch-them-all" term: "white or stained white". This to follow the same rationale used with "dark bays or browns".

Only time will tell how the terminology evolution will unfold :D !

My guess these are the incomplete form of Dominant White. I'd like to see the name of the color reflect the actual genetics. Now that they have identified the gene, there should be a test. Would live to see the complete color genetics for some of these white horses and see if there is indeed a linkage between the pure white version and non-bay (non-agouti).
