Mane pulling

Postby Mood Swings » Tue Apr 15, 2008 7:02 pm

Curious....

I was wondering if you had a yearling who's mane grows on the left side (lays perfectly as well) would you pull it on that side or would you try and train it to go on the right side?

My friend and I were pulling yearling manes today in preperation for inspections and we both feel that it is better to leave the mane on the side it falls naturally. I know others that think otherwise and do not feel a yearling should go through a sale with the mane on the left. Is there any relevance to that?

Thanks :)

I would "train" the main to lay on the off side. Especially if you are going to sell at auction. Admittedly, I have a broodmare whose mane lays on the "wrong" side - it annoys me, but we haven't bothered to try to correct it. With young horses, however, we try to get the mane on the right side.

Move it over if you are sending the horse to a sale. There is an old saw that that mane on the left side will cost you the sale in the ring.
