Flush After Breeding?

Postby BELLARINA » Thu Apr 17, 2008 12:53 pm

Does anyone flush clean mares after breeding or like when the vet checks to see if ovulation has happened?

You can infuse with antibiotics the day after breeding. A quote from Dr. Somebodyorother at Peterson & Smith "I do it on 90% of my clients' mares." I do it on older or problem mares. I did not, however, do it on the younger mare Dr. Somebodyorother was looking at and she did check in foal with no problems.

I would not flush or infuse young, clean mares after ovulation. However if the mare is a problem breeder, prone to infections or has a lot of fluid after ovulation then I would :)

The foal heat is typically the cleansing cycle. Unless a retained placenta is suspected, there is no reason to flush a mare.
