SHERGAR

Postby Shammy Davis » Thu May 08, 2008 6:00 am

My family watched a fictionalized movie of the SHERGAR abduction by the IRA the other night. Relatively little is known about the fate of this great horse or who the individuals were that were actually involved. SHERGAR only had one crop of foals in 1983. I was wondering if from that crop were there significant individuals that have continued his line up to this day. Any comments or thoughts would be interesting? Any North American progeny?

There's been a couple of Shergar movies. I think Aiden Quinn did one, but I have the one shot in the UK with Alan Barker (which is probably the one Shammy watched). I've only watched it once, but I believe it was a kid who was taking care of the horse when the kidnappers were ordered to shoot him so the kid stole him and hid with a band of gypsies.

The only progeny of his going to stud that I remember is Shergar's Best.

If you search the name on here, I thought there was a death bed confession by someone involved that he was shot because he got injured or was unruly. The confession / news story would have happened sometime over this last winter.

Machine gunned to death by a hard core IRA type, and buried in a bog. There was a thread with more details.

Sutherland Farm in Meridan, ID, where Shergar's Best stood, is now a sub-diviison. There must be message in this turn of events.

He had a son called Authaall which won the st leger and then came out to Australia where he wn a couple of group ones. I don't know what became of him stud wise. We had a great nephew mare which was a wonderfully consistent producer, he was a great sire. Aside from Shergar he got the wonderful Grundy. He used to sire really flashy types.

My wife and I were talking about SHERGAR and the fact that this great horse had one crop and yet, we in the US know very little about them. I checked some of the offspring of SHERGAR'S BEST and some raced in ID in lower class flat races. From what I know SHERGAR'S BEST was unraced.

You would think that with SHERGAR'S reputation on the turf and jumps that area of the NA breeding industry would be looking at his line more closely. Maybe I'm just not informed. I don't know. To me this is an interesting subject. I do know that in our area, many of the breeders who invest in steeplechase look to Europe for quality broodmares. These are of course those with money to support their habit, not the average breeder.

Nobody knows what really happened but it is commonly believed he was kidnapped by the IRA.

One interesting part of the story is that one of the people involved in the syndicate that was standing the horse was never paid by his insurance company as the horse's remains where never found. He has recovered from the financial setback but is understandably bitter towards the insurer.

His descendants turn up occassionally in a pedigree but none spring to mind at the moment.

There wouldn't be many left, they'd be 25 now.

You are speaking of SHERGAR'S progeny, correct? I did some research and apparently in NA some of Shergar's Best offspring were running in NA in 2000 plus or minus. His broodmare sire was SECRETARIAT. Those progeny ran on the flat. No one probably has any idea what would happen with these horses, if put to jumps. Any thoughts?

I do remember seeing Shergar's Best but saw it in an Emerald Downs program for which the son of this horse not sure could have been male or female but the horse's name was Red Vein. I was watching Red Vein and it came out of Shergar's Best line. Anyways to make this short I am afraid Red Vein is gone and broke down nov 26th 2005 Turf paradise. I really liked Red Vein too. Sorry to get off the subjest but you brought up the Shergar's Best.
