What are some thoughts? I'm a huge fan of horse racing and I actually received this link from one of my best friends who is going to protest the Preakness. At least these Peta 'facts' aren't as bad as some as the recent bullcrap I've heard the last two weeks...
From the mouth of Peta....

My thoughts are that it is non-factual generalizations written to appear factual and specific.
There are lots of little numbers after sentences in order to appear to have references to back up "facts". They use concrete numbers in sentences to appear to use "real numbers" but don't put them into context to show the real impact. And they gloss over the fact that the main problem with slaughterhouses in the US was generally agreed to be the horrible transport conditions but now, after their big "success" in closing US slaughterhouses, slaughterhouses still exist; in less regulated conditions and now with double to triple the ride length, the quality of which has not been successfully improved.
They use a generalization that "Few racehorses are retired to pastures for pampering and visits from caring individuals" to tie racing to slaughter, however racehorse babies are not produced from draft horses and ponies they come from registered Thoroughbred parents. And the fact that the horse does not go to a breeding farm does not mean it gets automatically gets slaughtered as there a large number of Thoroughbred riding and show horses and Thoroughbreds used in QH and Warmblood breeding programs. Additionally, on the slaughterhouse issue they phrase their article to condemn the racehorse industry for supplying the slaughterhouses but their own numbers show only 4% of the horses were racehorses, which indicates over 90% of horses slaughtered came from non-racing backgrounds.
I see it as people with no actual clue trying to whip uneducated masses into a frenzy over an issue that is not quite what it seems.

"Compare Barbaro’s story to that of Magic Man, who stepped into an uneven section of a track and broke both front legs during a race at Saratoga Race Course. His owner had bought him for $900,000, yet the horse hadn’t earned any money yet and—unproven on the track—wasn’t worth much as a stud, so he was euthanized."
Ah yes. Of course. Because all horses who break two legs at once are immediately put down because of FINANCIAL concerns. Y'know, I always thought it was because they wouldn't be able to stand or survive without suffering horrible agony, but this makes SO much more sense!
This sums up my response to PETA's fact sheet:

It is a sobering thought, for instance, that when Mozart was my age he had been dead for two years.

Ask the V.P. of PETA an the HSUS for that fact ,just how many GameFowl they have saved after their lobbyist pushed all the bills to stop cockfighting.
Zero... a big fat zero.
They killed every animal they so called "saved".
I have saved one rooster an 4 hens my self.
Guess I might need to beg for millions of dollars in donations for my act of kindness.
An maybe show a one eyed bird on local t.v. ads to get pity from the public.
I can only guess at how many poor dogs they saved after the Micheal Vick story a while back.
When they pushed bills threw for dog fighting.
Now it's hunting, fishing, farming, horseracing an dog ownership etc...
Ask what the candidates running for office, what they will let get passed in their term in office if elected.
That's a question I'd like someone to ask the candidates.
As for PETA & the HSUS.
If they all held hands an protested together against horseracing.
An a few car loads of MS13 gangbanger's drove by an bumped them all off,I would not lose any sleep.
Nut's like this ,that take your rights away in time of war an give them to animals.
Not too people many are watching the fruit cakes push their bills threw as most are working their rumps off to pay OPEC.
Only if one of their bills becomes law an effects you will you pay attention.
By then it's to late to act.
Because by that time they have bought someone off to get it introduced as law.
Good to know the Government can be bought so a agenda can be passed.
If the Horse Industry drops the ball on these fruit cakes you will be watching horse racing on the tube in Europe.
If you really want to find out about PETA or the HSUS surf around the hunting, fishing, farming, dog, gamefowl ,etc... forums.
You will be stunned to hear an learn what you could lose as in terms of rights if the ARA get their way.
That's how I feel about that.

Check out this PETA forum, where many of us racing fans have tried to tell them the facts.
