Below is a link to a story regarding trainer Jeff Mullins most recent drug violation-aTC02 violation.
Question; why does Mullins continue to push the envelope? Are the testing practices so bad he feels he can easily get away with it?
Are they tested so infrequently the odds are he will likely not get caught?
Is the penalty (in this case a possible 70 day ban) insignificant?
Is he stupid?

No 70 days is not significant. Co2 isn't a violation anywhere near a snake venom infraction
. In the grand scheme of things Baking soda is not going to put the horse or horses and riders into physical danger.
I don't know if it's a "this is how I've treated my horses for decades and I can't win without it," mentality.
Or
CHRB doesn't really do much but reduce the # of days and slap you with a fine. Maybe he needs another vacation on the sands of mmm maybe the Dominican Republic this time round
Or
Is it something that is effected by metabolism? I've never done it, so I have no experience to draw from. I have been told you can give a fairly large dose and be well under the radar (don't know that there is proof of that without playing chemist and doing your own little test to treat one and pull blood a different interval before, during, after significant exercise. How does it get by the blood being pulled in the receiving barn. How long out are they receiving the milkshake? If metabolism is a part of it and it is a part of your feed program (and it can be and does have some good uses) maybe not feeding it well out of the race might be a good idea. Treat it like a controlled substance and set a withdrawl time and hold to it. I suppose anyone's guess is better than mine on this one.

Andy Beyer wrote a pretty blistering review of his antics a few years(?) ago when he was forced to have all of his horses in a detention barn....and he hardly won a thing during that time frame. I think fans would like to see more serious penalties for violations rather than merely having assistants starting their horses while serving a penalty.

The issue with the milk shake is really that it is a RACE DAY treatment. That is not allowed. I would not have any problem with feeding a horse baking soda somehow if it wasn't a veterinary problem (I don't know if it is detrimental to the health of the horse to alter the pH of the blood that much). But when you have a vet enter a stall an hour before reporting to the receiving barn, snake a tube down their throat and pour in a liquid, that's a race day treatment, and it is against the rules of racing in every jurisdiction.

The problem with your idea on milk shaking being a race day medication, is that it doesn't need to be tubed or syringed. They eat it readily in a fairly decent amount. You can feed them anything on race day. Even while security is filming. As long as it's not a mixture in a dose syringe... Goes for creatine, DMG, etc. All white powder

Jeff can feel that he is slipping and he needs to try anything to continue to be a player. It used to be that O'Neil and Mullins were at the top.
Those days are gone forever.
John W. Sadler has emerged as the top trainer in SoCal and he will stay in that spot for many years to come.
Owners (myself included) are fickle. Win for me or see ya later. Look at all the top trainers who are now not even on the radar screen.
