It was diagnosed in leatherbury's barn which is under quarantine--2 year old filly. She is 1/2 to Ah Day--Nin out of Endette by Parkers Storm Cat. Poor little girl.

A horse can be vaccinnated and still get sick. :( I don't think KING would be one to pass up cheap shots.

Maybe giving a EHV-1 vaccine once a quarter vs once a year would be the thing to do.. I give an EHV-1 vaccine to my in-foal brood nares every other montgh starting with the 3rd month and that seems to work.

Taking a horse to a track is like taking a child to day care where they are exposed to every bug from every farm or barn with horses at the track.

QUESTION: what percentage of trainers do you think vaccinate for strangles??

FWIW, my vet says for a strangles vaccine to be effective it needs to be specific for the farm.

ask your Vet if he can identify a company that will sell you a strangles vaccine specific for your farm.

I had stranbles once and if there is anything I can do to not have it again I'll do it.. Also, I understand the intranasal vaccine is efffective.

The intra-nasal vaccine is, in my opinion, one of the most effective I have ever used. But it is a live vaccine and should be handled with extreme caution. And best given to an entire herd at once else the vaccinated ones need to be quarantined. But the new IM, Strep Guard, is also supposed to be very good.
