Pnemabort K

Postby griff » Thu Dec 11, 2008 10:18 am

I was looking at an ad for a sheriff's sale in Pleasureville, KY for 12/12/08 and noticed all pregnant brood mares have been vaccinated with Pnemabort K..

I've never heard of the stuff which does not mean much but was wondering if this is something I shouldook into..

Pneumabort K-1B for pregnant mares. The vaccine is given at the fifth, seventh, and ninth months of pregnancy. In regard to abortion, Pneumabort K-1B is the only rhinopneumonitis vaccine with federal approval for the prevention of abortion in mares due to equine herpsevirus-1 {EHV-1}. The EHV-4 initial vaccination is followed by a second dose in four to six weeks, boostered every three to four months for horses that are showing heavily. The vaccine provides protection for up to three months.

I use it.

If there is a high density of horses in your area you should absolutely talk to your vet about it. The risk of EHV exposure goes up sharply with the density of the horse population. On the other hand if your horses are very isolated and you aren't moving horses on and off of your property you can do a cost/risk analysis. Weigh your personal experiences with your horses having a problem against the relatively inexpensive price of the vaccine.

Pneumabort is available at your local tack shop for about $10, so you can give it yourself. It's cheap insurance. I sold a weanling to a man this year that was buying one because his own mare had aborted this year, and she was unvaccinated. He wishes he'd vaccinated now.

I've been using Prodigy for the last year as there are fewer reactions to it, according to my vet. So far so good :) The last few years I had one mare in particular that had reactions to the Pneumabort-K vaccine - fever and localized swelling.

I use it 5,7 and 9 months. Done so for years now. Something most all breeders should do or at least discuss with your vet.

Bargainblueblood - I was going to head over to that sale because there was one colt I might have been interested in. I think it was a Sunday Break, though, and I would have looked to resell. However I heard it was a widely advertised sale and would be quite well attended. Since the colt I was interested in was the ONLY horse in the sale whose stud fee was paid I thought he would fly past me at bidding time. And now that Sunday Break is headed to France well it is all just better for me that I didn't bother.

I called the farm to get the 411 - it was a board bill sale to try to recover board. The mares who were open were not bred because the farm was not paid - not for any of the transports to breeding sheds, etc. All of the in foal mares had stud fees owing for what they were carrying. All in all I think Keeneland is going to offer MUCH better values. I'd rather pay a bit more ($1-3K) for mare in foal, stud fee PAID, than pick up something and owe $7500 or so for the fee.

I vaccinate every 2 months for every mare in my broodmare band(pregnant or not)----throughout the year. It is much better for the mares, easier to track and keeps their resistance as high as possible. For the extra few bucks it is great insurance.
