Maryland-bred Registration

Postby merse » Sat Dec 13, 2008 6:12 am

So as not to hijack the Breeders' Cup/Sucker's Bet thread I thought I'd open a new one. griff had asked:
We have a couple of mares in-foal to Maryland stallions.. What is the $75 MD Bred fee and what does it get you?

griff, the Maryland-bred registration gets you a portion of the winning purse if your horse wins a race in Maryland. These races do not have to be stakes races but any race. You do not have to own it, only to be the nominator. I had a filly that I no longer own win back-to-back, low-level claiming races this past winter and I received a breeders' bonus for each race (about a week after the race). With the recent slots approval, the purses are expected to go up in a couple of years so this program will get even better. For more information, you can go to the Maryland Horse Breeders Association website or give them a call (210) 252-2100.

Griff,

From the owner's perspective, the nomination also makes the horse eligible to run in MD-bred restricted races and restricted stakes races (you're not eligible for those if not a registered MD-bred) and you also get bonuses for winning open MSW and open allowance races at MD tracks.
