Merger found in the dark backyard of Florida

Postby Travis » Tue Dec 16, 2008 8:24 pm

Hi all,

While I've been searching for Darn That Alarm babies - I got distracted - and now I am a new and proud owner of 6 yo Merger, by Mr. Greeley and out of El Gran Senor dam.

Merger was severely neglected and underweight, hanging out in Florida backcountry but other than that - he is a gentleman.

I've gathered all the info on him I could - including watching his races on-line. He's raced in IRE before coming back to US, trained by S. Asmussen.

Now he's joined my now 3 horse eventing stable. First I need to feed him though - before we do anything. I can hear his bones squeeking.

I would really appreciate if anybody knows Merger and anything about his past - please let me know.

Thanks!!![/img]

Awesome, Travis! These neglect cases are always so rewarding. I'll send you a pm.

Merger was not a winner in the US, but he won in the UK. He ran second in 4 English and Irish stakes. He made $118,193! He last ran February 20, 2006 at Gulfstream for Darley Stable and Eoin Hardy.

Travis, send me your email address in a pm and I'll send all this infor to you.

Good for you for helping him. None of them deserve neglect, but imagine how hard it is for them to grow up in the Darley system and then be abandoned and hungry.... :(

Hi majxmom, email address sent.
I've tried to post a photo of the horse - Merger - as he is now - I didn't figure out how to attach a photo to this message...

I guarantee Merger will not go hungry anymore - he will definitely make a nice riding horse, and maybe... eventer???

Thanks for your info about his past!!!

I found about him on local Ocala TB for sale website, there was his name, I've looked it up on the pedigree...
and there he was a nobleman!

I've worked in racing in Central Europe in the 80s. - I am used to poor conditions but at the time there were no drugs but maybe a hot potato under a tail in start box ; - )

Anyways - I'am keeping my fingers crossed - this horse will need a lot of care before we know he is competitive in eventing but he will make a nice riding horse for sure.

Congrats Travis and good luck with your new boy. A bit of trivia to add. You see on Merger's ped waaay back to his 4th dam? Her sire was Abernant :D . Abernant also was the sire of Abgar. If you don't know who Abgar was you can go to the Allbreed pedigree query and check him out.

Abgar stood at stud in Holland from 1964 until 1976. He was the sire of nice flat racers Pixicata and Abgars Bonny Boy to name a few, but he will never be forgotten in the KWPN world (Dutch Warmblood breeding).
He was beautiful and powerful, I saw him in the flesh at the Thoroughbred show many years ago.

Merger found...

Postby Travis » Wed Dec 17, 2008 5:53 pm

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for all your wonderfull info about my new horse Merger. Really appreciate it - I find it so interesting reading about how former racehorses found new careers.

I've posted my first photos of Merger here:

I suppose just copy and paste the link into your web browser...

When my vet first saw him, he said:
"this horse needs 150lbs and a haircut"...

Cheers.

Wow, what a handsome guy. I've got a dappled gray that looked like that. If only they could keep their beautiful dapples and not turn into flea-bitteng greys!

Very striking. It's so great that you did this for him. He looks like he's got a kind eye, and his head is really lovely too. I really like these stories.
