Senior Tour
I saw an article about a senior tour for track and field athletes and it made me wonder why racing secretaries don't write some races for older horses, and by that I mean something like races for horses 6 years old and older. The races could still be competitive and it would provide a use for older horses who have exhausted their conditions and may be declining in their ability. It would be a reason to breed for soundness. It would allow fans to develop an interest in particular horses and follow them for several years rather than one or two. Basically, it would extend the useful life of racing stock and, I think, make the sport more fan friendly. I suppose it would reduce the opportunities for young horses of dubious merit and so have some negative impact on the breeding industry but I am not sure that is such a bad thing if it is true that we just have too many horses the way things are now.
