Dumb question re: ND & Mr. P

Postby vineyridge » Sat Jan 24, 2009 5:56 pm

Mr. P was bred over and over to mares by Northern Dancer and many/most of ND's sons. Of his top money earners, per the PQ database, perhaps 30% were from mares of that line. ND was only bred to one mare by Mr. P, according to the database; and she was a nice racehorse. ND is a 1961 model, and Mr. P is 1970, so we aren't talking about a huge generation gap.

Is there any explanation about why the breedings at the time only went one way?

This is curious.

Yet another nick question:

I know its often stated that the Nasrullah/Princequillo supposed nick didn't work when Nasrullah was bred to the Princequillo daughter, Stepping Stone, who was no slouch of a broodmare. Step On is the only get by Nasrullah listed on the database with Princequillo as damsire. And Princequillo on Nasrullah daughters was considerably better but not great--that breeding only occurred 12 times through 11 different mares. And there weren't all that many Princequillo foals from Nasrullah sons. Only one Bold Ruler and one Nashua.

So where did the supposed nick come from? Later generations?

Northern Dancers book was limited to 40 mares or so a year. Mr. P's was much bigger, plus the age diff is significant.

Just as great a common denominator as Princequillo/Nasrullah a couple of generations back is the wonderful quality of the mares in question. I am awed by the mare lines of all the horses you cited.
