The Event Planner

Postby Bondama » Wed Jan 28, 2009 7:36 am

I am thrilled to announce that my 15-yr. old daughter, Rowan, started her first "job" this week. She will be an exercise and training rider for The Event Planner, an OTTB in retraining for the show arena. Initially, it will be the usual W/T/C, but the end goal is to teach him to jump. "Event", as he is called, is 5 years old, and a huge (16.2) handsome bay gelding with a big presence and personality to match! Rowan is thrilled, as she was selected out of 5 applicants, and told that while the others had more training behind them, first of all, none could handle the horse  , but second, that she had the best hands and seat they'd ever seen on someone with as little professional training as she's had. The owner, barn manager and trainer all agreed that she has a natural gift and they are excited to take her under their collective wings. It is the opportunity that I've prayed for for Rowan. She does have a gift, and just needed someone to give her a chance. Here are a couple of pictures. They're not the best, but you can see he's a good looking horse.

My aren't we observant. LOL, that's probably a valid question. These photos were taken the day we met everybody. We'd not really been expecting a ride that particular day, so didn't bring our own. When they did ask her to ride, there wasn't a helmet that would fit on Rowan's head. Her hair is very thick and there's lots of it. They let her go that time just for the test run, but she brings her own helmet for regular lessons.

What a terrific opportunity and Rowan appears relaxed in the saddle without being slouchy, nicely balanced on the horse.

Good luck to both and keep us informed of their progress!

Thank you for the positive and encouraging comments! I would be curious to know if anyone has any information on the horse....i.e., an APR or something? I'm told he was retired from racing because he had no desire to run. He is remarkably calm and gentle, especially for a youngster.

congratulations to Rowan that is great! But my very first thought was her riding without a helmet! I am a major advocate of helmets and helmet laws..please for her safety make sure she wears her helmet EVERY ride and EVERY horse. I watched a video in college about some famous rodeo star who is majorly brain damaged after a bad fall without one.

Congratulation to Rowan!
She and "Event" look terrific together. It sounds like her new boss sees a lot of potential in Rowan.

You dont alwayas have to "fall off" to suffer a severe injury. Horse trips and falls, drops dead under you, or some other incident. My daughter just turned 4 and rides her pony every time with her helmet. She gets it herself before she takes the pony out. Im 39, been riding for 30 years and I still wear my helmet when I ride. I thank my 10 years in the USPC for that bit of sense. :D

She looks great Bondama. If she is that into jumping etc get her into Pony Club if you can. She will love it!

I agree 100% on the helmet thing, USPC graduate here as well.....They showed us enough videos while we were young to ensure that only the already "brain dead" get on their horses without one.
I can count the number of times I have gotten on a horse with out a helmet on one hand-in 20+ years....
The one thing that does drive me wonky is the number of kids I see riding their bikes without helmets....and personally I don't think bike helmets are that safe (no cervical support)...And lack of helmets on children in those buggies that attach to bikes

Also, does anyone know if they make hemets small enough for 9 month olds and where I can get one? My son loves to fall on his head while he is learning to walk.....

In our country you are not allowed to ride a horse without a helmet.
Thank God, I had one on many years ago, I was unconcious for ten minutes, but awake without any harm, thanks to thre helmet.
You have a lovely daughter, keep her that way!!

Rowan looks great, very relaxed and confident. As for the helmet, when I was schooling for a show the horse flipped and I hit my head on the jump and my helmet was knocked off. Needless to say, I was out of it for about 2 weeks, that was about 35 years ago when the helmets only had elastic chin straps, not very helpful!!
