Story behind the photo ??

Postby mcgarrett » Sun Feb 01, 2009 9:09 pm

I saw a photo today of Great Prospector attacking Golden Derby during the Tremont Stakes in 1980 it was titled "The Savage" does anyone know any of the back story to this ? Any info would be great and has anyone had or witnessed anything like this happening during a race ?.

Some say Easy Goer lost the Preakness because he was more intent on nipping Sunday Silence than winning the race. He ran the length of the stretch with his nose pointed right.

Here is that replay of the preakness with Sunday Silence and Easy Goer. Sure looks like easy goer isn't happy about sunday silence taking the lead.

That's a great photo - a cheap claiming filly my trainer had a couple of years ago would knock teeth out in stretch dirve battles like that.. she was a bitch and a half.

I can recall a sprinter Vencedor trained by Luis Barrera, he would attach his rivals in the stretch.

so do horses that bite at another horse in a race get dropped down, disqualified, or let alone? I have never see anything like that.

They are supposed to be taken down if it happens in a manner and at a point in the race, where the stewards can determine it affected the order of finish.

Do any of you remember the gorgeous light grey Free House? Remember the picture of him with his right eye opened as wide as it could be, peering over at Silver Charm, who was on his right side? (Think it was Silver Charm?)

Anyone have that picture? It was so funny, and the captions that ran with the picture were pretty funny!

I do remember him, and I'm so sorry he's gone from us so soon. If you find that pic, post it! :)

There used to be a horse named Banker John that ran in Northern California (owned by Wayne Brand) that savaged any horse he was head-to-head with. They took a picture very similar to "The Savage" and made posters that said, "If you can't beat 'em, bite 'em!" I've still got one. :D

VENCEDOR ("Victorious" in Spanish) initiated his racing career at the El Comandante (now Camarero Racetrack) where he was known by the name VETERANO ("Veteran" in Spanish)

http://www.pedigreequery.com/vencedor

Apropos horses who returned to the Mainland check the following names:

DAWN GLORY
GRAY DANCER
BANDIT BOMBER
TINAJERO
BOLD FORBES
VENCEDOR
MISSED OUT
SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE
CARIBBEAN LAD
PAPELOTE
SNEAKY SOLICITOR....

just an impromptu list since the list is exponential!

I believe the western sire Pole Position had his number taken down a few times in the seventies for biting.
