I need to buy a starting gate. Does anyone know where to find them used?

United Puett is about the only manufacturer left, I think. What you probably would be looking for is a "training gate" as opposed to a starting gate, just a couple of stalls. I would google "starting gate for sale" and "training gate for sale" once a week and see if you get lucky. There aren't very many for sale, and you have to be patient to have one come up locally for you.

I live in farm country. There are a couple of TB farms around me, but it's not like this is Lexington. Yet I have actually seen one for sale locally just with a sign on a street corner. The guy wanted $5000 for a pretty rusty four-stall gate that looked like the electrical was incomplete. It sat there for about a month, and I figured he wouldn't sell it. But one day it was gone, so I guess somebody made a good offer.

If you really want one and have no luck, try an "wanted" craigslist ad (free) or an ad in your state TB breeders publication.

Good luck!

Around here (Lexington/Versailles) there have recently been 2 sitting by the side of the road with For Sale signs on them. I'm pretty sure that one was in the parking lot of Horse Cents in Versailles. You might try giving them a call.

Before I was able to buy the 4 horse gate I have now I made one out of wood. Worked great for years.

Probably a lot safer, too, martha! I'd rather hit wood than metal any day! :D

I had it padded all around with rubber.. It 's still standing after 32 years. We use it some times when just hacking out in the big field.

There's two in the Thoroughbred Times advertised in the Feb 14th issue, which I just received Saturday. One is in the classified ads and the other is a small display ad on the page ahead of the classifieds. One was a 901 area code in TN, can't remember the other one.
