The article on Sunday was twice the size of the articles covering the derby preps and they were right next to each other. This is not the first strike against the guy, can the NY state racing and wagering board suspend his license?

AC4H gratefully acknowledges and thanks The Exceller Fund and its President, Gary Contessa for their donation of $500.00 towards the veterinary expenses incurred by the recent intake of four malnourished thoroughbred mares from the NY killpen. "Longtime breeder Arthur Hancock, who testified before Congress last year on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in horse racing, condemned the incidents.

“Our livelihood depends upon the public perception of our industry,” he said Thursday in Lexington, Ky. “Anything that happens that takes away from that good, positive energy is killing our livelihood, so I’m extremely disappointed.” "

Me too, Arthur.

So he'll book a few more mares to Unbridled Song to cover his attorney's fees and spin doctors.

An elderly friend of mine told me once that a similar thing happened to Rex Ellsworth, who owned Swaps. He had hundreds of horses on his ranch in CA. The grass was all eaten down, and Ellsworth had gotten horse-poor, so no one fed them until the place was raided by Animal Services and the horses were confiscated. He seemed to be shamed out of the horse business. Years later, I saw a news story that he was going to buy some more racehorses, but never saw a reference in that story as to what made him get out of the business when he had been very successful. I never heard of him having a stakes horse or even any winner after that, so I don't know if he went on with the plan or what.

I read somewhere that when John Galbreadth who was co-owner of Swaps with Ellsworth saw the conditions the horse was living in, he bought Ellsworth's share and kept the horse in Kentucky. I think that was how the story went. Anyway, the gist of it was that this great horse was kept in worse conditions than most people's "backyard" horses.

Here's a link to Rex Ellsworth's story. It would be nice to have confirmation as to his personal slot in hell.

Sorry, Ernie. Present or not, the horses are your responsibility. Reading your explanation only infuriates me more.

no excuse for this

This guy owns 1/2 of Unbridled's Song. He must have plenty of money. The Times articles said NY Horsemen's Society or whatever the officiating body is, can suspend his license in NY. His excuses didn't hold any water.

I agree with your opinions on both Ellsworth and Paragello.

Hey guys, this is America , we have rights even though the victims do not! Burton Sipp killed horses for insurance and still trains in Ohio and Kentucky, go figure! Any shit like this would be addressed with the utmost gravity overseas.

it almost makes you wonder when you read of stallions dying of accidents or heart attacks, how many of those are intentional for money

Thanks for posting that link. That story was heartbreaking; I had no idea it was that bad. Evil, really. My friend had also told me that you didn't know if you were getting Swaps when you bred to Swaps. But the tidbit about the sock to Swaps' head was so distressing. Swaps must have sighed with comfort when he was moved to KY.
